Lancaster, PA - Corn Question

was down that way for a funeral yesterday, first time I saw the area, some great big beautiful cornfields

some of the fields were freshly disced, around here in upstate NY the ground is still frozen

question - what the heck do they do with all that corn?

Your in my area. Fields arent THAT big. Its rare to find a 100+ acre farm anymore. A lot have been chopped up in smaller farms, and road frontage sold off for houses. To answer your question, we have a lot of dairy, chickens, and hogs in this area. A lot of amish cant produce enough feed, so they buy corn from the mills or the bigger crop farmers. Due to our location(close to the larger cities) it is a desirable area for hogs, layers and broilers. Lots of corn goes into these animals. If you have the land and want to build a house and contract to raise chickens or pigs there are any number of companys that will sign you up.

While a lot of that corn goes to local mills, a bunch of them have contracts to Perdue, Holly Farms and other eastern shore chicken raisers, and a large portion moves south from Lancaster. Even with as much as the eastern shore produces, it is a corn and bean deficit area.
