oil/water seperator??

Anyone ever made one?? Or are they too complicated? Logical place (easy cleanup) to wash the tractor and vehicles drains in to the public sewer. Was wondering if it would be an affordable project to do a seperator before it goes into the main drain going to the street. Not a big amount if any oil, just the normal seeps that usually show up and get washed off..... Need to do a sump(??) anyway to catch mud etc to avoid clogging, be nice to be able to incorperate a seperator there.

Thanks for any tips...

Dave

Don't remember where I read about it but it is done using a large grease trap like the ones in commercial kitchens. All it takes is large enough size for the flow to be low enough so that the oil has time to rise to the surface.

what you are refering to is called a triple basin. it is used in the sewer line to capture any oils in wastewater. here is a link to one.

Think something like that could be made on a small scale? Camacity needed to handle washing a vehicle now and then (50 gallons water tops)??

Provided you come up with a means of keeping storm water out, a restaurant grease trap would work well.

I do have a means that'll make me a little more popular with the bosslady.... Have a drain in the barn and a cement floor that won't stain so bad (don't care anyway) as the cobblestone driveway) I don't know what the grease trap looks like but will try google.

Got it!!! Found pics to make one from 5 gallon buckets.... Now that I know what I'm looking for, I can probably find one.....

Thanks again.
