ok im confused, im working on a yanmar mini excavater, the starter is bad, when the key is turned the starter sounds like its free spinning, but doesn't engauge the bendix, the guy who piled this thing in my front yard, held the key in the start position and let the starter run, finaly with some light grinding, it rolled the engine over and started, i pulled the starter off this morning[ what a pain in the A!] now with it on the bench, when i put a set of jumper cables to it i get nothing at all, then when i touch the little terminal where the switch wire goes which gives the bendix the signal to move, the bendix works fine, cant make the motor itself spin on the bench, the starter does feel well, loose and wrong, like something is wrong inside the motor itself, anybody played with one of these starters? i did order a new one, 350.00 and its in california, but id like to make sure thats the problem for my own piece of mind, the flywheel does have some minimal wear on it, but it will still work fine, not at all what i expeceted to see on it,

Bench testing is only good if your bench setup is 100 percent. Used to rebuilt starter for cars, people usually wanted to see starter operate before installing. Lots of them would not work for bench test. Put on cars and were fine. Hard to get good connection with jumper cables. More worried about flywheel. Another thing if starter installed doesn't act right, loosen bolts and attempt to move a little-retighten and try. Dave

Not trying to criticise your purchase but I was faced with a similar problem while working on a Honda tractor of mine.

Starter was shot and a new one was $385.00. I called the local (70 miles away) starter guy brought it in and the next day had a rebuilt stater for $32.00.

Didn't mind the ride...Motorcycle weather and all.

Regards, Brad

If this a solenoid shift starter, it is either faulty contacts in the solenoid that make the starter run after the drive is engaged, OR the drive is slipping. I'd bet on the contacts. Have you had it apart?

I have a similar engine in my little JD455, Yanmar 22hp.

thanks guys, i wedged my body in the engine bay of the excavater and the flywneel is ok, it has very minimal wear, so the problem has to lay in the starter, im used to chevy/ford type starters so this kind is new to me, i orderd it thru the local carquest where a long time friend workes, [ a older gent who knows where all the odball stuff can be found] we'll see what happens the excavators owner took a backstep at the price, but i reminded him that thing aint a 350 chevy and out here were lucky to even find one, on my bench test, thanks, yes my bench setup is very minimal, so i guess thats why it doesnt work, probably isnt getting enough amps with jumper cables to work this starter, it will work on the common ones but i know some starters require more than others to work, no rebuild shops around here anymore, todays throw away mind set i guess only us older people remember when you fixed what you had instead of buying new,
