Serial # question

A friend has a JD B she wants to sell. The serial plate has been painted over. How would one remove the paint without ruining the numbers? TIA

I use carb cleaner and a rag and wipe spray and wipe. Those numbers are easy to remove so care and time and rubbing in needed but NO sand [paper etc

My husband soaked his serial tag in mineral spirits overnight, then gently brushed with a nylon brush. This process took about one week.

To see pics of his results and description of entire process, search the archives for topic:

serial tag got painted what do I do??

Then scroll down to see the before/after photos - it came out fairly decent, at least it is readable - rather than totally covered by paint.

Oops...just tried to search for it had trouble finding it by that title. Will just copy info here and re-post the B4/after pics.

My husband made a small tray out of aluminum foil, then placed the serial tag in tray and poured mineral spirits over it (used this because we thought it was more gentle than some other chemicals). He let soak it overnight - then brushed very LIGHTLY with a brass brush to help score the oversprayed paint a bit. After that, soaked it 24 hours and brushed it each night with a nylon brush. Repeated this process daily, for about one week. Finally when we considered it clean enough,I very gently cleaned more paint from in between the letters on the tag with a very small exacto knife. (We took it from total red overspray to fairly-well readable... then stopped so we did not remove all the black background paint of the tag, since we do not want to restore it to perfection as our old tractor will be kept pure rust, so want the tag to look a bit on the rough side as well).
