OT---Suprising price for Pipe

I sent my wife to purchase one stick each of 1/2 and 3/8 Black Iron Pipe from a local retailer.
These were 21 foot length of pipe.
She was charged $27.77 for the 1/2" pipe and [b:a2f789ef59]$121.13 for the 3/8" pipe[/b:a2f789ef59].
I called to see if a mistake was made and was told that the price for 3/8 pipe was higher because demand was less, and the 1/2" was bought in bulk!!
Does this make sense??

I had to do a repair job in the barn back about September. At that time a 21 foot length of 3/4 galvanized was $89.99 and nobody believed me.

Price like that, I can see why demand for the 3/8" pipe would be less.

I'd take the 3/8" back and use all 1/2".

I paid $ 56.00 for a 8 foot, inch and a quarter copper pipe,
this fall. Seems like everything is off the wall, valves, tees
elbows black pipe ect,,

What mkes sense is to NOT use the 3/8 and use what they buy in bulk. Duh/ Like if 3/4 inch plywood was cheaper then 5/8.

Pipe that is made overseas is going to go up. Gov't placed
tariffs on these products that are taking effect this year. The
company I work for buys alot of cargo containers of pipe each
year. The price will go even higher if you can get it. One good
thing is now we can buy domestic pipe for less than import
and it's better quality. Maybe good for the US and it will give
a few people a job.

I'd take both pieces back, get some pex & fittings. Much cheaper, easier, and it won't rot out like that iron pipe.

metal pipe prices are bad enough, i had to have 2 3/8 hyd hoses, jic ends, 2 wire, 30 inches long made at napa $95

Check the price of the scrap steel that stuff is made from and you can see why anything made of iron is going to be costly.

Things are expensive here anyway, but T post prices almost doubled since last year......

I paid big bucks for Weatherhead, USA made, 1/2,
2 wire hydraulic hose at NAPA, last spring, but
so many dealers are selling China hose and ends
now. I run a 3500 PSI system on my splitter, and
don"t want to take the Chinese risk!

was a plumber for many years,,yes that is pretty much standard practice. I am kind of curious though ,why would you run 3/8" when you could run 1/2" for 1/5th the price?some kind of special setup or something?

You know that $250/ton your local scrapyard paid you for that old tractor you dragged in?

THAT is why you pay $121 for a length of 3/8 pipe.

theres another reason its used very little, and why it so expensive.its simply not legal for anything in 99.9% of the world! quite honestly i'm surprised you found a full joint locally.

Why was a larger pipe--1/2" only $27.77??? That's the grumble!!!

This pipe was bought to run an extension for a natural gas line supply.
The 3/8" would have more then enough volume for the appliance needs and would be much easier to thread and to run in the obstructed area.
I need 21 foot of 1/2" but only several small sections of 3/8".
I will return the 3/8 and replace with another 1/2"

why is the mona lisa worth more than a mcdonalds sign? rarity is the answer. nothing wrong with running 3/8 if it will do what you need and it meets code, its just unusual to see it any more. Before you go overboard with capacities and things though on gas, while your returning that piece of pipe pickup a 3/8 flex gas line( which is also not legal most places) and blow through it.that whistling is why most folks dont want it anymore!. does make a good elk call though once you get the hang of it! LOL. good coyote locator also, not so much a good thing when your heater fires up and your trying to nap .

LOL I built some nesting boxes for the wifes chickens. Was going to use 1X6 and 1/4 inch ply for the bottoms. Was cheaper to by 3/4 inch ply and just cut it and make the boxes.
