Cutting fire wood in Michigan.

Hard to believe this is Mid-February in Michigan. No snow and almost no frost in the ground. No ice on the lakes, the bait stores are throwing away more bait than they sell. Crazy winter. The tractor is a 1942 Farmall H that my grandfather bought new.

I just got done grinding feed. Was trying to remember if I'd ever worked before on February 9th without my rubber boots on. Just wore my leather boots. It's all supposed to change tomorrow though. That's why I ground today instead of waiting til Saturday when I've been grinding.

It has been crazy. I pulled logs out last saturday in a sweatshirt with the allis chalmers and never even got any mud on the tires! Needless to say no snow either!!! The downside is that the sleds have not even made it off the trailer this year, but I guess that is a small price to pay for a winter like this.

Nice tractor. Looks like you"ve been busy cutting some wood for sure.I"ve been thinking about dropping a couple of trees myself. One is close to my ploe barn. A little too windy to do it today,..guess I"ll wait. Not much snow comming,..weatherman says less than an inch for our area.

I agree crazy winter, the ground is semi froze here which is great because were on clay, going out to cut wood again today myself. Nice pic

Here in The Netherlands we are having a strange winter too. Until end of January very mild and VERY wet (rain). Then it started freezing and we got a few inches of snow last Friday. Lowest temps for more than 20 years!
I think that global warming is a pretty small effect, however, weather extremes are becoming more extreme and that really has me worried. By more extreme I mean, for example, if it is wet, it is VERY wet; if it is hot, it is VERY hot. Etc.

In the mid 1920's, my dad said it did not get cold enough one year to kill cotton in upstate SC. People sidedressed and cultivated the plants and made a second crop.
After last winter, I am glad for a warmer one.
Supposed to be in the upper teens this weekend.

PS. Just came in from plowing for planting corn in mid March.

I"m kinda late getting around to it, but "Soldier of Orange" by Erik Hazelhoff is one of the most absorbing books I"ve read in a long time.

Oh my back! Seeing those bigger rounds on your trailer makes my old back hurt...'course it doesn't take much anymore. I usta swing a splitting maul right in the woods to make those chunks lighter so I could boost 'em into my old New Idea spreader I usta take to the woods with my old '45 H to cut wood. Used the Super M if there was some snow. This was back in the early 1980's...Whew, that's 30 years ago...I was in my 40's. The old workin' H looks as normal as can be.

I guess I'm not the only one. I decided to grind feed today too when I probably could have waited another day or two. As my dad use to say "You gotta make hay when the sun shines". Looks like a change could be coming here in Michigan. Maybe we will get a little winter yet. That fine with me if we don't though. I know I sure got allot of things done around here this winter that I'm not able to do in a normal Michigan winter.

Had to get in on some firewood today, moved some down to where I cut/split near the garage from the black cherry pile thats been there since March '09, I had dumped 2 other truck loads in front of it, finally getting to the back of the pile, have enough for next year, but now its time to haul logs up the hill again.

Apple and Black Cherry, a tad more than I needed to carry, had to take 1/2 off to get up the darned hill, then go back and load it back on again, really need to retire the 850 on firewood duty and find a heavier industrial.

State side it is the wonderful JET stream holding the cold way up north for a change. In the 30's and above most every day in Northern Illinois.

Same here in Maine.

Dad's been cutting and splitting for a week or two. I help when I'm not working. It's been crazy for sure, no snow, everyday over freezing except for a few.

Dad's Kubota's been going most of the work but my BN is attached to the splitter so at least it's earning it's keep.

We had a trip that took us in the northern part of the greater Lansing (MI) area today. Many ponds and swamps along freeway were open water or only partially covered with a skim of ice. Here in Montcalm county, they have been icefishing for a few weeks, even through the last couple warm spells. Saw one fisherman leaving the lake the other day, towing his gear in one of those plastic sportsman sleds. It was floating over the ice on a layer of water. NO, not me, I don"t swim that well!

I love Michigan,...it is my native state prior to joining, serving, and retiring from the US Navy for over 21 years. Some day I will be back there! Thanks for sharing the pics guys!

Been warm UP this way too so I've been cutting firewood as well. Too much snow to haul it out of the woods without extra work, so I just stack it up, and will haul it out of the woods come summer when its nice and dry.
