DUMB DUMBER

LOL My bil/sil have a lake shore home on Big Pine lake. He's the one I mentioned before that works parts time in the winter doing recoveries. (I'm about 25 miles south of Perham)

Been a real bad year for ice here, but it's been way more than just cars and trucks through the ice....ice houses, four wheelers, snow mobiles and people on foot. Talked to a guy the other day who told me that there is about 18" of ice in most places where in a normal year it would be 36".

I grew up where lakes rarely freezes solid, so I am not comfortable being on the ice. My view is that one man walked on water, and that was not me.

Don't know about those guys, but my insurance clearly states if I'm on ice, I'm on my own. Even after all the stories recently people are still tempting fate.

Yea and vehicle recovery starts about 3500 bucks and MN DNR only gives you a certain amount of time then starts fining you by the day. They removed one a couple of years ago from West battle Lake, cost 10K.

Years ago on the north shore of Lake Superior, I was out in the woods. I had to cross a river which was iced over. It was a rather sluggish, slow moving river. Perhaps 50 feet wide where I was crossing. I carefully checked the ice as I went across and all was fine. I was well passed the deep part and almost to the other side when I heard a sound. I guess I went on auto, because I immediately started to throw my arms out to the side. The ice gave way and down I went. My arms being stretched out to the side stopped me from going all the way down. Fortunately the ice around the hole was solid and I was able to scramble out. I was soaked all the way up to my chest. By the time I got back to my truck I was pretty cold.

AMEN..... I went through the ice up to my armpits about 54 years ago. Haven't been concerned about it since...... because I haven't been out on it since. ONCE IS ENOUGH!!!!!

(quoted from post at 18:48:43 02/09/12) Why don't those fishing huts have pontoons?. or am I missing something.?

We normally have pretty safe ice here, 3 feet or so. Then add what ever the snow fall is and how ya gonna get that pontoon out there? Tow it with your truck?

Me I don't go out on the ice. When I go to the boat ramp, back up and the trailer and all stays on top of the lake my fishing for the year is done.

They do love their beer in Minnesota.

It's pretty common for vehicles to fall through the ice here in Michigan. But losing your vehicle is only half the fun. The DNR will then make you pay to have it retrieved from the lake.

I have ridden my snowmobile many miles on frozen lakes, but only when the snow on the ice is packed hard by a lot of traffic over a number of days. On the other hand I have declined when there has been a recent warm spell, because I know that the water under the ice will be slowly melting it.

Right now here in NE wisconsin there are 7-8 guys stranded out on a sheet of ice that broke off and is floating away on the Fox River near Green Bay. Have the TV on in the background and I'm sure the coast guard will come out with their helicopter, and their gonna get out their new fan boat.

This is not even a week after a rescue of very similar nature out on the Bay of Green Bay. Ice here is not very good this year and Sturgeon spearing season is upon us now, so there will be more than a few to fall through the ice this year.

Pontoons would make them very hard to move and they do move them, most several times a season.

Bendee, they are putting their cars, trucks and 4 wheelers throught the ice driving out to their "huts". And you should see some of those "huts". Custom built ones can go as high as 30K, be equiped with recliners, beds, a bar, TV's and sat dish systems and chemical potties big enough for 6-8 people to fish in. Most of the time you don't hear about the ice houses going through but this year there have been a lot of them go through too. We have had people go through on foot which is unheard of here.

One of the problems we face here is a lot of our seasonal workers haven't been wise with their money and suplement their food heavely with fish while on unemployment. When we have a late freeze or warmer weather they still need to be out there putting food on the table or they can't keep up with the house, truck, 4 wheeler, snowmobile and other payments. Most of these guys can't find a winter job that will pay what they make on unemployment because there just isn't work here in the winter. So a lot spend a lot of time cutting firewood until the lakes freeze and then spend the winter on the ice.

I don't ice fish so I'm not out there but on some winters some of the lakes out here look like there are samll towns on the ice.
