portable propane heater (small)?

Hey Folks,
I have a room about 5x10 ft that I need to keep above freezing. Electric heater was eating up the power then quit 2 days ago / froze some pipes.
I have an infrared (??) heater that clamps on a propane tank but is either on or off manually. Left it on overnite and it was 90 degrees in there this morning. Anyone know of something small that has a pilot light or igniter and a thermostat? Something that is still small enough to be portable...
Or should I just look for a smaller heater. Would like to be able to just set at 40 degrees and let it go.
Thanks.

Dave

Don't the 18,000 btu lp wall - or free-standing - heaters have thermostats? Still too big for your little room, but... They are not rated for inside the house living quarters of course, not sure of your application.

At 50 square feet, don't think unvented gas is very safe or cost effective, that's a tiny area. An electric with thermostat should be the real deal for that small an area.

Heck, a lightbulb might be all you need?

I use an old clothes iron. Put it at the lowest, coldest spot in the line. As the water heats, it rises in the line &gets cold, falls back down, gets reheated. Maybe fiberglas batts or wrap will hold heat. I put the warm iron at the base of commode bowl & keeps it from freezing in all cold weather so far, for several years now. As long as there's electric, its ok.

I have 2 similar sized rooms that I keep above freezing with a very small WALL propane heater. Has a pilot and ignitor; there is a low and high setting. One has a variable control on the gas valve. The one (bathroom) in the shop I set on low and then leave the door stand open about 8" because the room is very well insulated in well insulated shop.
The other is in the "pump house" the room where the pressure tank and manifold to route water to the various buildings. Not as well insulated (2-3 inches of spray on insulation), set the heater on high and the room never gets over 50 degrees.

Got the heaters from Northern Tool.

Maybe a small ice fishing heater. Even those are usually on or off. But might find one small enough for your needs . Gander Mt, Cabala"s , Reeds sporting . Bass Pro ?

I don't have the numbers on BTU, but I have a small, circular heater
that is a radiant heater which mounts on top of the tank. It has 3
settings and I use it for spot heat when I am working in the winter.
My shop is uninsulated and being an elcheapo, no way I'm going to
heat the whole thing. Bought it at Lowes.

HTH.

If you are worried about freezing pipes, could you wrap the pipes with heat tape, then insulate? That's how it's done on mobile homes in the US. If you decide to use heat tape, tape them directly to the pipe, don't go around the pipe. The more you keep the tape in direct contact with the pipe, the less likely you are to burn the tape. Only wrap with fiberglass, it won't catch on fire.

If you decide to go with heat tape, try to get the length you need, or there was a time when you could make them the length needed.

Heat tapes use very little electricity too. LOL

(quoted from post at 08:15:39 02/08/12) Here in MN a electric heater is way cheaper at .10 per KW than propane at $14 per 20LB. Also electric is safer and easier to control.

You know.... That's gonna hafta be the ticket. Electric costs a little more here but is IS much safer. Thanks for the slap.... Heat tape on the pipes and I'll pick up one of them oil filled radiator space heaters. We keep food and drinks in the room also, so don't want it real warm. Completely concrete room except aluminum windows and a wooden door. No chance of fire damage and it's not attached to the house.

Thanks again. I'll just plug in one of them little energy monitors and do the math.

Even Walmart has now started selling extra small electric heaters like 800 watts. Might do the job. Dave

One word of caution - be REAL careful if you go propane, even for just a little while.

Not all heaters are the same.

The ones you use in ice shanty's have a catalytic material that allows them to burn without the carbon monoxide.

MANY propane heaters - including most "job site heaters" - do not have this feature and WILL KILL YOU. It happens over and over again. People ignore the warning, or think they'll feel the poisoning coming on be able to get into fresh air as needed.

If you're going to heat a small space - or any space attached to another living space - you can NOT use just ANY propane heater - be ABSOLUTELY sure it's rated for use in a living space.

Having said that - I'd go with the pipe tape anyways, unless you want the room to be warm for some other reason.
