Case 450 brake failure

This is what happened when a right side brake stuck on. The Case 450 crawler loader started free wheeling and dropped over a 30 foot bank. It was a scary ride to the bottom. The operator a friend got some bruises , a broken nose and stitches. He soiled his pants too. Be careful out there, these old machines can fail at any time.

glad he was OK so to speak, sounds like it needed some maintaince on the brakes but you are right any thing mechical can fail old or new

Confused. If the brake stuck on, wouldn't he be stopped? Or did it pull him to the right, sending him down the hill?

Brake stuck on ? That sounds strange ? I had a 450 once brakes didn't seem to work and really weren't needed.
Maybe they did like I did once and hit the wrong track drive lever. Went to turn and hit the reverse lever and darn near thru me out ! Those go into gear RIGHT NOW.

some of them had a valve on them when you stepped on the brake it would disengauge the tranny,( clutch disconect ) for full engine speed when needed for raising the loader ect, I agree that if the brake "stuck" it should have just spun around if any thing, sounds to me the brakes themselves were not functioning but just a my guess cnt

He told me the brakes weren't working right , so he was trying to bring it down the mountain road using the high low shifters. I guess you can steer them by putting one side in high and the other in low and vice versa? He said he tried to shift the right side to the low range to get it to steer to the left. That is when it supposedly started free wheeling and took off to the right. I know I am going to have a heck of a time getting it out of there. My 888 Case excavator might do it. I guess the Case 450 weighs in at around 8 ton?

Any way to safely get down there by it ? You could dig out that tree and stuff below it and then try pulling it back upright. Did he get it shut off ? or do you think it ran long enough to ruin the engine ? If it was shut off I'd try and get it upright then let it drain down ,check all the fluids/change some if needed and then try starting it up and drive it out of there.

Mike------It is going to be a battle no matter what. First off the bank it went over is about a 70 degree drop off. Where it game to rest has about a 30 degree slope. Since the darn thing won't steer and stop, it would be a struggle even if it did start up. There is a stripper on the top about a 1/2 miel away with a couple of big dozers, so we might go that route. No he did not have a seat belt on and he is one lucky guy to have crawled away from that one.

a straight 450? 6 tons give or take.

I remember when dad had his 1150 delivered. Somewhere along the way the delivery guy was told it weighed 9 tons. Apparently he barely made it out of town in 1st gear. He used some strong words relating to dad that it was a fair bit heavier than that.

Glad no one got hurt but it doesn't sound like a very experienced operator. Maybe it happened too fast but putting the bucket down might have stopped it.
