My F 150 tire info needed

My 05 F 150 came with 255 65 17 tires, which look small in the wheel wall. I was looking at some 265 70 17 tires, which looked wider and a little taller. Will this tire get me more gas milage, or less, being a larger tire for the engine to keep the tire rolling, or are these tires too large for a F 150? Any opinions appreciated. Stan

Check, the 265/70 might of been an option, however it might of been with a different suspension or gear ratio. If you go to an on-line tire comparison chart it shows the circumference of the larger tire to be about 5 1/4 inches greater. Your observed mileage will be lower, because on each revolution of the tire you'll be going an additional 5 inches or about 5.25% more. The larger tire will increase the height of your truck higher usually means more wind resistance=less mileage per gallon, don't know if it's enough to be significant. Don't know about rolling resistance but that can vary on different tire models in the same size. Don't know where the larger tire will move you on the engine's torque band but 5% isn't that great.

Stay with original size have heard of too many that they thought a "better" size would work then foun out these new machines need to be kept original.

That's not wandering too far off of stock. You need to keep the same "rolling diameter" for speedometer, odometer, ABS and VSS to perform as intended. Some vehicle's can have this changed in the controllers. At Chrysler it was called pinion factor. Gerard

I did exactly that- went with the 265/70-17. As a Michelin distributor, I had decided to go with LTX AT2s on it, and it wasn"t readily available in the stock size. Rides great, wears like iron, and ( as the speedometer calibration I purchased trying to get out of a ticket shows) less than a 4 MPH diference on the F-150 at 65 mph indicated.
I plan on staying with the 265/70-17s....

Don't know why Ford down sized. My 98 150 had 265 70r 17 with a 4.6. My current 08 1500 Silverado has the same.

I was talking about that last week or so ago. I have three trucks I could use. The 8.00 delivery charge per load is worth it to me not to take the time out of my day. Stan
