Wow. Thank you for sharing. Was a interesting read.
The tractor brought $20.50. Much less than the horses. I was surprised.

Don't know what year this sale was held, but after WWII there wasn't much interest in Fordson tractors, so that probably explains the low winning bid.

I noticed that in the ad the tractor and plow were listed together, but in the auction results the tractor brought $20.50, and the plow sold separately for $8...

Fordson plows are kinda scarce these days.

Now that is really cool. Looks like a good majority of the sale items went to family as I see the name Krusemark (Elmer and Clarence) listed several times.

Very interesting. I must say that if my dad had sold out in 1933 his sale bill would have read much the same as this one excepting for the Fordson Tractor as he ,at that time had a Hart -Parr 18-47. 2 teams of horses,1 team of mules. 10 cows in milk and some small dairy stock, several goats etc. He had a large flock of chickens, some ducks and several geese.Dad always liked his flocks of chickens and ducks and geese. I remember him talking about his covey of Guinia Hens, and his Border Collie Dogs.

Hard to imagine those prices, when talking about the depression years my Dad used to say ''back when a nickel was as big as a wagon wheel''.

Yep, my uncle Elmer was "farmin" at that time and uncle Clarence got his start here.

Both of them, as well as my uncle Raymond, went on to be preety sucesfull farmers in central Illinois.

Dad being the youngest, plowed, planted and cultivated young minds as a teacher over his 38+ years in the town he (and my siblings) grew up in!

That is pretty neat. I took a peek on Google Maps to see where the location was. My mother's family farmed (and some still farm) about 90 miles south east of there in the Effingham/ Shelbyville area.

I find it interesting that the teams of horses brought much more than the tractor. There also is a tandem disk that brought $19.00 and the tractor only $20.50.

I will admit that a Fordson tractor was not a dream tractor but I would think it would be worth more than a team of horses. I can only guess that the cost of fuel/maintenance verses feed made the horses cheaper to use.

My Grand Father always said he much preferred working with a good team than a tractor. He always liked the companionship of the horses. That did NOT get passed down to me. I have a strong dislike for horses and could not see liking them over a tractor to work with.

Yeah, lots of my relatives there. Lots more of yours! I'll have to show that to my dad- brothers of both of his parents were there. What a cool thing to have- thanks for posting it.

It is amazing what our parents kept that was important and meaningful to them.

Your grandfather sure had a lot of farming equipment and livestock.

Thanks for sharing with us.

Not everyone is a horse-person. I prefer horses for a lot of things- in the woods, spreading manure, picking rock, raking, picking bales, fencing, discing pastures, stuff like that. I prefer a tractor for loading manure, heavy plowing and discing, mowing, baling, moving round bales. Mixed power works. You use the appropriate tool for the job.

This is very interesting, thanks for posting the auction listing and prices.

Bret4207- when you said not everyone is a horse person, you got that absolutely correct. My grandpa hated horses so much from having to work with them as a kid that he refused to let my mom and her sisters have horses when they were growing up. Myself, I love my old tractors but I would love to have a team and learn how to work with them. Like you said, use the appropriate tool for the job.

Almost looks like some of the same vintage equipment some of the Amish around here are auctioning off as they are leaving. Of course their stuff is all on steel. DOUG
