OT: Some Music

Jackie Evancho- almost 8 million hits on Google. She is a full fledged star at age 11- a voice that is unbelievable- to the extent that she was asked to sing a warm-up exercise before her second appearance on American Idol, because everybody thought she had lip-synched someone else on the first one.

Not even in the same ballpark as this girl, but...

This christmas my daughter (also 11) recorded herself singing "silent night" as a little gift to me.

She's not at all the singing type, just never sings, ever. Too shy to even sing happy birthday at parties - so it was a big surprise that she did this.

Far from perfect - her timings off, she's struggling to hit the high notes, etc, etc.

But as her dad, it's the best version I've ever heard, or ever will hear - have to admit it brought a tear to my eye:
Monique Singing

actually there's no video to my link - so I'll stick a picture in here of my daughter that will also bring this around to being more "on topic".

Beautiful girl, beautiful voice. I just hope the "voice coaches" don't ruin her. They can't stand a pure, sweet natural voice.

you have a lot to be proud of , and she even likes tractors. I saw nothing wrong in her song-- little more practice, stretching her vocal chords and will be better than perfect!

A word to Monique,, keep it up Girl.. Shyness will go away... I wish I would have tried it in earlier life...Just maybe I may have lived a more enjoyable
profession rather than a truck driver.
Follow your heart.

Where do you come off with a statement like that? A good voice coach will save that voice. If left untrained as she grows she will be pushed to perform songs she"s not equipt to handle. Remember Charlet Church?

If the girl wants to be an opera singer, a voice coach may be a good idea. If she just wants to be a singer who lots of people enjoy and are willing to pay good money to hear, maybe not so much. Voice coaches can help good singers to sing better. There are lots of people who can sing, and sing well. Then there are the unique voices, those that have an indefinable something. It’s these unique voices that make it big in the music world, not the “good” voices. For those uniquely-gifted ones a voice coach will only be attempting to gild the lily, or worse, to mold that singer into the sameness of all other “good” singers in a particular genre.
Yes, I remember (Charlotte) Church; I bought her first album. I know she dropped off the scope, but I never knew why. I have a vague recollection that her turning into a wild, rebellious diva may have had something to do with it. I truly don’t know.
Now I have one for you: remember Mario Lanza?

I remember. Now after listening a time or two more. This youngster is allready with a coach. Her breathing technique is good and you don"t have that naturally.

I know; that's why I made the comment. I listened to most of the other U-toob postings and as her age progressed I could hear the "refinements", some of which did not impress me. But hey, it's her life, her voice and her career. What do I know?
