Homemade and Handy

Old parts palace where I work part time has a homemade freight lift (elevator). Big electric motor going into an old truck transmission, see if you can make sense of it.

I ran an old Sidney lathe for years that had an electric motor running through a Model A Ford transmission. The tranny had reverse ideler removed and a special gear put in its place to give four forward speeds, reversed by reversing the motor. All driven with flat belts. It was a great old lathe, wish I had it today.

I can see the lift cable wrapped around the drum. They must have wanted higher speeds for a light load going to the top floor of the "palace".
