muffler on a diesel tractor

Hey folks,
The muffler on my tractor has a hole in the bottom that ain't too small...

??? is, does the muffler serve a purpose other than the obvious on a diesel motor (effect idle, performanve, etc)? Or is just patching the hole enough and keep running it?
wouldn't think twice about just patching, but when I look at new ones for the older tractors (diesel) they are much cheaper than the ones for the newer generation... Got me wondering if they need to have more back pressure or something.

Nope, Back pressure is a bad thing for any Naturally aspirated Diesel..

The only thing that can is on there for is to muffle the exhaust noise..

Put a turbo on it. Turbo will quiet it enough so that you need only a straight piece of pipe. Tell wife how much you save on muffler!

Brookdale put an M&W turbo on a 4600SU years ago, and man, was that thing loud with a straight pipe! Ended up getting a straight through "turbo muffler" for it! They were running a PTO Speed Sprayer with it, but the transmission & PTO couldn't take the abuse. They ended up getting a used 7600 to run the sprayer.

My 930 Case had a straite pipe on it when I bought it and drove it home, Straite in the shop and off come that pipe! My ears were still ringing the next day. Best $45 I ever spent! The dumb a$$ guy up the road from me put himself in the hospital 3 times because he was to cheep to buy a muffler to put on his tractor(had holes in it). Third time liked to killed him and he got the message and his wife had IH come down and put one on! Dont try to patch it take it off and put a new one on, Its more than worth it in the long run. it's prolly beyond welding anyway.... This one goes under the tractor and there is an ugly patch on the hood where someone covered the hole for the vertical muffler. Think that will be the inspiration to put the vertical one back on. The underside one costs 200 euro here ($260+/-) and I can order one thru external_link for 20-30 bucks....... And not have to worry about setting hay on fire or breathing fumes (pipe is right under the left foot panel)...

I just went down to local emporium of mufflers, had them find the nearest input/output size to the tractor manifold, They expanded a short piece, to fit manifold, added a 45 degree stub to outlet, welded it all together, presto, custom muffler. Chose a large oval shaped muffler, in place of bullet shaped "cherry bomb," and tractor is much quieter. Proce, less than OEM muffler.

Somebody will surely tell me if I'm wrong, but I've always just got a cheap fiberglass "straight through" auto muffler (glass pac), and put it on with a clamp. Been doing that for 40 years, haven't ever seen any ill effects from it.

I try to keep a decent muffler on my machinery. I've got a few farmer friends who have a distinct hearing loss, especially in the left ear, primarily because that ear is usually turned toward the exhaust while working in the field. But having a straight piece of pipe does sound 'mean'. It'll only cost about fifty bucks, where the muffler is about sixty. Then you can spring for a set of ear protectors for about another $50...

Engines are air pumps. Air in, air out. restrict either and you
reduce performance. Why do you think large CU in engines are
work horses.....CUBES....air in air out.

Ford diesels especially hate output restrictions. Have had a
couple that would not run if I put a new muffler on them with
baffles in it till I knocked the baffles out.

Had a JD 4230, 100 drawbar hp, 400 cu inch diesel with this
little 1 1/2 inch exhaust on the OEM muffler. Thing ran like crap.
Ripped it off and put a straight chrome pipe on it (roughly 3
1/2"....exhaust made for the turbo that made one a 4430) and it
purred like a kitten. Took it to local parades a couple of times
and got a standing ovation as I passed the crowd...course it was
built in the USA in '74 and I had a sign in the cab window
attesting to that fact....so that could have been part of the ya-
hoo, course you could hear every cylinder hit on that big inline

Spent a little quality time with the neighbor kid and the tractor... Turns out the muffler was solid inside just a hole where the inlet pipe goes in and makes a right angle... Burned/blew a hole about tennis ball size. Cut it all out to solid and welded a big patch out of stainless steel in place... Like new and nice & quiet.... Also put fast hitch hooks on the lift arms so I can get a little lazyer......

I's happy now...
