O/T Toyota Corlla transmission question

Going to go look at a Toyota Corolla 4 door that has a 5 speed manual transmission. But it only has 1,2,5 working and 3and 4 do not work. So I know this works on a cable shifter so my thinking is a broken cable. So how likely is that or is it more then likely a big problem and a money pit??
Thanks

Third and fourth use the same shift assembly. I would guess that it is an internal problem. IIRC, 1st and 2nd, 3rd and 4th, 5th and Reverse use the same clusters. I would try to get it cheap enough that a used tranny could be swapped in.

Figure it's gonna need a transmission, if you can't buy it cheap enough to make it worth putting a tranny in it walk away. If it's got any age on it this probably means the actual value probably corresponds to it's weight and the current scrap price, go an extra $50 if it has nice tires.

5th was the most likely gear to fail, I would lean toward the shifter. I traded one to a guy years ago but it my be aluminum cans by now.
