HEY at larry@stinescorner:
I had a brain wave last night: I have may be 20
cattle mineral tubs and my wife wants to plant few things this summer. So I thought I would cut them down in height and use them what do you think:
She wants to plant a few **tomato’s, ** strawberries **Peppers ** Peas** just to name a few will this work

Not Larry, but I'm going to chime in too.

We have planted lettuce in a tub like you are talking about (I think). It is black rubber about a foot tall. I think the black color is a benefit for early or late season plants. After the lettuce is done it gets flowers put in it, usually rose moss.

Have never tried a vegetable crop in the hot summer, so don't know if hot roots would be a problem or not. It doesn't seem to bother the rose moss.

Why cut them shorter? You just have to bend over further to tend the plants. Dirt to fill is relatively cheap.

I plant a few things in 5 gal. plastic buckets to grow for the house. I drilled a few small holes in the bottoms and filled them with top soil.
They look nice on the deck and handy to the kitchen door.
You have to keep an eye on the moisture in the hot weather.

This worked for me last year- tomatoes amd peppers: Lakewood, Colorado

If it was me I would not cut them down any and I would fill them with the compost I do every year. I have grown many things in 5 gal buckets filled with that compost and it works well. Of course I still do the raised beds and the cold frame set up

A guy near me grows early potatoes in mineral buckets, about 50 of them, one plant in each pot . He plants indoors real early and carries them out when the warmer days come and back in if there is going to be any night frost!

Why cut them down? Leave at full height and save your back. I would like to get back to gardening but don't think back would take it.
