which backhoe is better

Hi I was looking at a 1980 JD310a and also a 1978 International 3500a and was wondering if one seems to be a better machine than the other. Any pros and cons would be great.
 
A few years ago a fellow puller gave me some good backhoe advice. He had a 3500 Ford for sale. When I went to look at it , he told me since I kinda know you, I would look around for a Case you can afford. Just stay with a 2 wheel drive and no ex-tended hoe. Well I took his advice and bought a 480E. Has that good Cummins motor. Just weights 10000 lbs and I can haul it on my 14000 lb trailer. It also has a hyd thumb. It cuts in half our firewood cutting. and I get to stay on the hoe. Vic
 
Thanks VicS all I own is case and allis chalmers equip and love it .Its just that these two backhoes are close and cheap.
 
Of your choices, the JD. IH were never very popular and getting parts could be difficult. You could also look at Ford and Case machines. How much do you have in your budget?
 
as others said I too pefer Case by far but between the JD an IH the JD is a far better machine and parts are available for them as well, just my thoughts and am not picking on the IH
 
310 JD hands down. I have an ih 260 hoe now. bout the same as your 3500. little newer. Bought it cheap and it does what little I need done. But... It's hard to get on and off annd hard to see out the cab. Very poor design. Have to go to Komotsu for parts. Ran a 70's 310 where I worked years ago. Much better hoe and parts should be easier and cheaper to get.
 
From my experiences with older backhoes dating back to the early 1970's I have to say just about any kind is better than Internationals of that time. I worked for a family member with several Case CK "hoes" doing contract trenching for Pacific Gas and Electric. The most popular brands used by us and our competitors were Massey-Ferguson, Ford, John Deere, and the Cases like we had. No one used Internationals.....
