help!!!! we have been working most of the day adding a Behlen power steering assembly to our farmall 400. It was off of a parts tractor we bought and we switched everything over and plumbed it the same way it was on that tractor. but it only works if you pull one of the hydralic levers open. then it works great but as soon as the valve shuts it stop working. like the pump isnt staying "live". what am i over looking? any help would be great. thanks

You say you plumed it the same WAY.. The donor tractor either did not have a valve or for some reason you are not getting hydraulic preasure to the steering unit except with the valve open. Pretty sure you have a pluming problem one of two things no preasure flot to the valve or no return... Kinda sounds like you are opening the rueturn when you open the valve but for sure you have a plumbing problem.

Maybe you didn't install the passage plug that goes in the lowest hole between the inside control valve and mounting post.

Did you install flow divider valve? Am thinking that is the valve that Slater is referring to! By opening on of the hydraulic valve you are directing the oil and pressure thru the power steering unit because it has no where else to go until you return hydraulic valve which allows oil to return to resourvour.

This is the plug. You also need to change out the flow control valve and the first valve on the valve bank. The two are connected with a "J" tube as shown below. Look at the CaseIH on-line parts book.

Give puppy its own dedicated belt-driven pump from the front of the crankshaft And enjoy. Those prioty valves are known to give problems. There are plenty of automotives that can be used. Armand

If you have the different regulator valve with the pipe between it and first aux valve, and if you have that plug in place with a good o-ring on it, then your flow divider valve is worn. Then I would pull that plug out of out side and check the spool on flow divider to see if it is worn. You may be lucky and a new spool could cure problem or unlucky and valve bore worn too much to do any good. Like someone said, check the parts book for layout of parts.

thanks for the help. i have installed the different regulater valve with the j pipe that goes between it and the first valve but im not understanding where that plug is or goes?
