satellite internet uses!

hello all
i have been in the rural world of satellite internet for 6 years now.
wildblue for 2 years...till i switched to hughesnet...figured the grass was greener...it was not.
they claim 1.2 mbps download...i get like 800K mps...
better than dialup...but not much
got an ad in the mailbox yesterday for Exede by wildblue... 15 MBPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
are they serious!? cheaper than Hughesnet too!
i'm going to find out tomorrow...the man is coming to hook me up...so hopefully by 5 pm tomorrow i will be watching allan play the guitar and lanse weld on youtube...because right now it takes an hour to watch a 10 minute video.

if anyone is interested i'll give a report tomorrow night...my internet speed has been my one source of frustration in my rural world...no DSL, fiber or cable option.

Let me know how that works. We now have Wildblue which works ok, but like you said takes forever to download a video. Ours started out alittle better then seemed to get worse even though the dish is on the house(not as subject to frost heaves like it would if on a post). Also seems slower at about 6:00 P.M. or so maybe due to more people using it at that time.

My issue with it was always the data caps. I had the 17gb package and it wasn't enough for a lot of what I do.

Also the high latency of satellite connections makes things like VOIP/gaming almost impossible.

Do you have cellphone service to your location? If so, check out the "air card" service. Much faster and more reliable (weather) than satellite. Also adds mobility as you can take it with you.

I had Hugesnet for four years. I just switched over to a wireless USB device with Millenicom and Verizon. I run five computers with it at home and it works on the road, just about anywhere I go. I love it and it works much better then the Hugesnet satellite service ever did. Plus - I can now take it with me. Also $10 a month cheaper.

My wife purchased a Mobil hot spot from A T T and really works great . Have driven across the country with it and have not found a place where it won't work.

i don't have decent cell service...
located in a dead zone between 2 different towers...about a 1/2 mile for Good service in both directions..get NO service in teh house...and like 1 bar on teh front porch...i guess metal roof is a prob.
but i was looking at an atenna and booster

from what i read this is going to be a world of difference...we'll see though...i have been nothing but disappointed in the past.
like i said 1.2 mbps was the promise of hughes...i get like .8 so i figure is these guys promise 15 mbps then if i get 10 mbps (2/3 of promise) then i'm still 12.5X faster than before...so we'll see.
the service is $150 set up
$49/month plus 9.99/month equip, 2 year lock-in.
that is with a 7.5 GB/month allottment...
next tier up is $79/month...i forget how many gig...
i don't think i'll top it
but right now i am totalling out at like $85 w/ hughes.
i don't usually like being a guinea pig - service just became available jan 16...
but this is worth the risk to me.

I left dialup for a local company figuring that I would keep the money at home. About 4 years of that and I had had enough.

Last spring I hooked up with Hughes and bought their fastest service. It wasn't all that fast.

Well, somewhere in the overall scheme of things had this local boy who is a computer whiz kid and he happened to mention to me that my router was an antique. I need a router as I have several computers with one down link modem from the satellite; some are wired and some are wireless.

Spent all of about $75 for a new Cisco (brand) router and life hasn't been the same. Service is non-interrupted, available 24/7 as long as it isn't raining so hard that the signal can't get through, and speed is superb.

Might have a look at you router if you have one before you blame Hughes.

Same here. I could get maybe one bar if I went outside and walked around with the cell phone. So, I put up a yagi antenna on the side of the house and got a signal amp. Now my bars are off the scale. Phone works great and so does this new wireless cell service.

cellphone extender in the house and get satilite service from cellphone company. got my extender online for $160. best money i ever spent. now cellphone works anyplace in house and girlfriend is taking online courses from local college and the high speed needed is now gotten. we run 2 high speed computers off the one extender. wilson electronics desktop signal boost.

About a year ago our first aircard was dying and contract was past out so we tried Hughes net/ Wild Blue. They played some trick; We called Wild Blue but Hughes net showed up, apparently some territory thing. Anyway the Hughes net was a sad joke compared to the aircard. After a month trial I told Hughes net to stuff it and got another aircard.

With the aircard I can stream a movie if I want to (although my plan is only 5GB a month so I don't). The Hughes net couldn't even watch a youtube video without stopping 50 times. The final straw was when we had weather coming through and I tried checking the weather sites for radar images and, well, satellite don't work in the rain or heavy clouds. So much for that!
