So I picked up a nice used heater to keep the garage warm while I play with my tractors. It was dusty so I blew it out, put fresh fuel in, new fuel lines and plugged it in. Perfect it worked. I put the cover on and now it won't stay lit. Took the cover off and it would stay lit. What the ?????

any ideas?

Thanks.

Possible air flow change with the cover, Look at the way it is designed to move.
Possible disruption of the electrical system. Look for places where wires could touch. or high voltage spark wires might arc to the cover.
Fuel could be pinched off when the cover is on. These are not rocket engines, but they are particular about assembly. Jim

Check the air filter in the back of heater, sometimes this happends when they are starved for air. Also check pump pressure usually around 4-5 lbs if I recall. Good luck.

Most of the time trouble is in the vane pump. Take it apart and clean it. Make sure the vanes are free in the slots. Clean the filter.

It means you are not getting enough fuel. On the side of the pump you should find a pressure adjustment. Set it til it runs rich (flame out front, smoking) close lid then adjust til little to no flames come out but end of heater glows red.

Every suggestion made has been right on. But if it still acts up after you've gotten everything up to specs you might just have to run it with the back of the hood raised a little. I went through every nit pickin thing I could touch on my heater several times but I couldn't get it to run right with the hood on. I finally made a couple of straps to hold the back of the hood up an inch or so and it's performed flawlessly ever since. I got the idea to do that after posting my problem on this site. Jim

I have a temperamental one like that..

What I have found is if I cover the intake end with a shop towel it runs fine and never misses a lick.. plus, it's a tad quieter this way. My issues started after the rear "grill" got broken, but never associated that as my issue.

I have now put in new lines, all filters changed, vane pump cleaned up, nozzle cleaned up, fuel tank cleaned and flushed only to have it not start unless the "hood" was opened.. As soon as i closed the hood down, within minutes it would quit and smoke you out.. (and trust me, I was getting fuel.. it would drip out the front while trying to gt it run again).. Oh, and fuel pressure set to manual specifications.

Tried the shop towel on the intake, as just a hunch, and have ran 3 tanks of fuel through it this winter so far, don't miss a beat now.. starts right up, every time, and stays running until the thermostat or I turn it off.

Sounds like you got the one I sold. Rebuilt everything possibe and then just ran it with a metal wedges keeping it up a tad.
Just hand a propane Reznor furnace in the corner and be done with it. I did that11 years ago and it had it's first "annual" P maintenance this fall. :)

Ok, so I fiddled with it. There was one wire that was just a hair bit loose so I pushed it on and tried it again. It worked, so I put the cover on and it still worked. So either it finally got all the "ugs" worked out of it from not being used in years or it was that stinkin slightly loose wire. Hopefully it will continue to work. If it doesn"t I will let you guys know what it is again.

Thanks for the help.
