Looked at a 1997 F350 with 157,000 miles, 351 engine, automatic. It started easily and ran smooth, never pulled a fifth well. I didn't drive it. What are your thoughts of this product? I am looking to pull a 5th wheel horse trailer, likely 30 miles each direction, and likely haul a little hay. Gas mileage will likely be poor but overall not that much use. Keeping it tractor related, would look great hauling my MF 35 around just to let others drool.

i have a 99 f450 and f350, both drw, 450 has 5th wheel rails with a gn adapter.. 350 has a pop up gn ball.

both are the 7.3psd though.. not a gasser.

still.. the basic truck fram is the same.. pulls great.. plenty of power.

if you want to pull real heavy stuff.. do yourself a favor and get a set of airbags for it. my 450 has the airbags.. and you notice it once you start getting 12-14k loads, vs the non AB hd suspension on the 350.

I have a 99 F-350 7.3 dsl. power stroke, didn't have much pulling power when I got it, found a used "chip" for $250.00, friend installed it for me, she runs and pulls fine now, he said it upped the HP to the rear end 85 hosses, she likes fuel, about 12 mpg pulling 12,500# tractor.

I have a 91 F250 with 351 ci eng and E4OD auto trans. I drive the hills in NW Arkansas, it could use more power for just the truck w/o a trailer.

351 cid,,chug-a-chag-ga...it will pull, will be straining for all the power it has,,a 460 cid will get around 10 mpg, will have pulling power,,, the 7.3 diesel is an iron horse motor for pulling and durability,,depending on your preference.. if price is right or can you nego price... be worth looking in to...

Heres my 5th wheel toter.7.3 w/turbo,5 speed, dually crew cab.It has 219K Miles right now. It"s seen a lot of 8-10 MPG hauls since I"ve had it,lots of hauling around Colorado.Wolf Creek Pass maybe twice a year.Monarch Pass regularly,It smokes some but not enough to get worried about. The old truck rides real good. It has Firestone air Bags for suspension help.I pull a 35' Jayco 5th wheel Rv trailer mostly,11600 LBs according to the vehicle sticker.

If your looking for something with lots of power and lousy mileage, my neighbor has a 98 Chevy 454 w/411 rear end set up for a 5th wheel w/62,000 miles on it he is getting ready to sell(so MI).

351 wasn't much of a pulling engine and neither was the 460 when you compare it to the GM 454.
7.3 turbo diesel was the first Ford engine (really IH) in quite awhile when it came on the scene that was a good trailer puller.
