Just received a new issue of AAA travel magazine and a reader wrote in that he received a $40 ticket in the mail from the state of Maryland. Accused of going 68 mph in a work zone on I-95. He also stated that he didn't remember a work zone in the designated stretch, and that he did pass through there after midnight. Seems like New York state and Maryland are imposing harsh penalties for speeding in work zones, even if workers are not present. All that is required is signs that it's a work zone. Maryland is using automated cameras, particularly on I-95, and work-zone speed limits are typically 45 or 55 mph. The program, with its $40 fines, has grossed nearly $14 million for state police safety projects since it began in 2009.
According to Maryland DOT, on average, 12 people are killed each year and nearly 1,500 injured in crashes in work zones in Maryland.
Hmmmmmmm.
