o/t work zones

Just received a new issue of AAA travel magazine and a reader wrote in that he received a $40 ticket in the mail from the state of Maryland. Accused of going 68 mph in a work zone on I-95. He also stated that he didn't remember a work zone in the designated stretch, and that he did pass through there after midnight. Seems like New York state and Maryland are imposing harsh penalties for speeding in work zones, even if workers are not present. All that is required is signs that it's a work zone. Maryland is using automated cameras, particularly on I-95, and work-zone speed limits are typically 45 or 55 mph. The program, with its $40 fines, has grossed nearly $14 million for state police safety projects since it began in 2009.
According to Maryland DOT, on average, 12 people are killed each year and nearly 1,500 injured in crashes in work zones in Maryland.
Hmmmmmmm.

40 bucks?? That's cheap. Most states the fine is automatically doubled when the alledged violation is in a marked work zone.
There are more hazzards in a work zone than just people working there. Narrowed lanes, uneven edges between lanes, equipment or supplies close to roadway.

In many of the states that I travel through there are signs saying that it is enforced when lights are flashing. I see that as much better because people tend to lose their sense of caution for work zones after passing through many times with obviously no workers or work going on.

Also a fairly new law in NY that you have to move over, slow down, or do something that shows a little caution when passing an emergency vehicle on the side of the road. I've always done that when passing anything on the side of the road! How do you know a door isn't going to pop open? Tow truck driver near here had his legs chopped off when a young girl smashed him into his tow truck bed.
There are just so many idiots on the road.

I went from ohio to atlanta georgia last week on I-75.If you drive the speed linit you'll get run over or cause an accident.I drove through work areas that had 45 mph speed limits and cars were going 75.In areas where i was driving 70 mph some cars had to slow down to keep from rear ending me.A lot of cars were only ten foot apart, bumper to bumper at 75.

Yep you are exactly right.. spring comes and they plant barrels all over the place.. I always said they just turn the pot holes over and make lumps out of them. every other year they just do the sections they left from the previous year. Most pa roads you cannot drive the speed limit safely.

Wonder how I80 to the west from Clarion is now .. used to be like riding a bull with the old Mack.

Anyone who gets a drivers license should have to spend a day in a work zone on foot !! Many times we have a person walking changing bulbs or batteries on the lights after everyone else has gone home, just easier than stopping every 50 feet to change or turn them on.

All work zones in Vermont have signs. Fines are automatically doubled. They should be tripled or quadripled. A while back the caught a dumbazz going 94 mph in a signed work zone. Straight to jail to await arraignment. I guess you can't cure stupid. Have a goodun.

That is where the patrol needs to get to work. I live just 5 mile off of I75 and do not use it because of the idiots driving on it.

I work road construction in the summer. You would not believe some of the idiot things I see EVERY day. Thankfully I am one of the lucky ones and get to stay in my semi and not be out on foot.

In Illinois the minimum fine is $375.00 for speeding.

Kill a worker and it is $10,000.00 AND 14 years in jail.

We still have IDIOTS every day that get ticketed.

I wish everyone driving had to work in a workzone at least once.

If you come to IL, slow down or you will get a ticket.

Heeeeeyyyyy!!!!!!!Proud of you folks.... 12 replies without anyone mentioning the cameras or bigbrother....... You don't wanna speed in a work zone here at all.....

we've got a similar law here in Michigan. I think it causes more accidents than it prevents. I had a guy clip me on the expressway because he just switched lanes without looking to see if there was room to do it. No damage to my truck bumper and not much damage to his. Said he HAD to move over into my lane because there was a cop on the shoulder up ahead. And I've seen lots of near-accidents from people trying to "obey the law". Lack of common sense is the problem.

If I'm on an open stretch with little traffice, I'll move over when I see a tow truck or cop or even a tire-changer. But in rush hour? No way! Just be alert, don't slam on your brakes or change lanes suddenly and cause an accident behind you.

Maryland has cameras in those work zone areas. They're spending more money than they're taking in and they're raising tolls on their bridges next month. The sad part I doubt if anyone was working that late at night. Hal

MN law states that "if possible" you must move over and slow down for an emergency vehicle. Fines double in work zones too. I think it's about 80 bucks for a regular speeding ticket here. Don't know, haven't had a ticket in a very long time.

And there should be fines for construction companies leaving up work zone signage when there is no work taking place. We have places here where the signs are up for 3 weeks and only one part day of work was done. Everyone ignores the signs when there hasn't been anyone for that long. The boy who cried wolf.

sounds like a nice source of revenue.... The law is the law.... Free country, break it if you want and have the bucks to support the habit.....

In PA there will be a white flashing light on a sign telling the motorist if the work zone is active or not. But even if the work zone is inactive there still could be hazards that exist. I spent 34 years working on public highways and had my share of close calls. One time we were paving 1 lane of a two lane road and had a car come right up to the back of the paver, in the fresh unrolled asphalt. He went around the lane cones and two rollers . The guy had no clue he did anything wrong.

I forgot to mention that in PA, the road workers can take the Lic. plate no. and the vehicle discription and give it to the state police if a drive was endangering workers. A lot of work zones now have state police posted in the work zone.
