OT Quit Smoking

How many of you quit smoking cold turkey? After forty years of huffing on these things, I have made up my mind to quit. Is cold turkey the best way? I am open to suggestions from ex smokers, for those of you that have never smoked I know your intentions are honorable, but if you have never smoked you really do not have a clue...and for what its worth, if their is anything better than a cup of coffee and a smoke in the morning, the good Lord kept it for himself! Thank you in advance

Laugh if you will but when I quit I chewed on sunflower seeds to take my mind off of it. I had smoked for 13 years and stopped cold turkey. You have to have youre mind set that you are going to quit! I havent smoked for 18 years now. The first couple of weeks were the hardest after 3 months the urge was pretty well gone. Good Luck!

I smoked for 12 years, and have quit for about 7 now. Sunflower seeds also helped me, also used a nicotine patch but make sure you follow the directions. Just depends on you, one thing works for some, one thing for another. Also remember what helped me was an old timer told me "It"s just not having the next cigarette". good luck cause it aint easy.

do whatever it takes.... I quit cold along with the wife 12 years ago, she lasted a year and I'm still a nonsmoking small puncture wound..... She quit 3 years ago by going to a seminar that was advertised in the paper as "smoke free in 4 hours or money back"... cost 90 bucks... Don't know what they done but been looking for a "nicer in 4 hours" add ever since  I quit several times on bets but never was really addicted...Could smoke 2 packs a day or none... never really cared.... Just do what works for you and don't get discouraged... If you slip, no problem, just try not to do it too often............ If you're gonna use the patches ang gimmicks, you might as well just keep smoking.... My opinion.... Cold turkey with an unopened pack and good lighter "just in case" is what always worked for me......

Good Luck

I quit 30 years ago, after smoking three packs of Marboros a day (the real ones). I cheated and chewed Red Man for a year after -so I guess that's not 100% "cold turkey." I then quit chewing since my wife was eternally disgusted with me. No problems sinced and I don't miss it at all - except when I've got a cold beer. Seems unfair to drink a cold one and not a smoke or two (or ten).

I find it ironic that smokers often think smoking calms them down -when in essence - it often makes them nervous wrecks.

My college-professor brother just died of cancer and he never smoked a day in his life - so who the heck knows? My mom smoked for 80 years and she's still alive and almost 100 now (no mind left though).

When I started smoking, cigarettes were $2 a carton and 25 cents a pack at the military base. Now in NY - somewhere around $10 per pack? That price would make me quit faster then the fear of cancer.

Try the electronis cigarette! I love it. It takes care of the cravings and gives your hands something to do. Plus, you still blow out 'smoke'(water vapor).

until slick willy came along and decided that the troops didn't deserve any breaks, mboros were 6 bucks and camels were 4, generics 2.... Now, everything across the board is between 38 and 42.... Liker went from 3-4 to 20+ overnite too,,,,,,, do you catch yourself being a small puncture wound when others are smoking "in your space"????

After 41 years and smoking 6/7 packs a day when I stopped, it was Welbutrin from the Dr. and will power. Smoking is a habit, and you have to break the habit. You cannot quit smoking as easy as you think. I believe that you just have to STOP. Stopping is because you want to. Quitting is because you have to. Like a kid, tell him he can't and he will bust ?ell wide open to do it.

Why I always kept a pack with me....... remember once, putting a cigarette in my mouth when I first went to work, kept it all day working in the motorpool and lit the oily/greasy mess up in the evening....... real good deterant.....

I smoked for over 30 years. I was smoking over two packs of camel strights a day. I didn't start out smoking that much and when I quit I went down slowly. Don't carry your pack with you. Leave it somewhere so you have to walk to get one. After you are down to less then a pack a day leave them at home and only smoke one in the morn and one or two in the evening. Then say it will be your last pack and stick to it. One other thing is do not tell any one that you are quiting because they will always be asking you how are you doing and for me that would not work. HTH

I smoked for 15 years, and i have been smoke free for a couple weeks now. i stopped smoking "cold Turkey". i would have to agree with the fellow posters that coffee and a cig. or beer and a cig. is always great. The thing is that training your brain not to associate the two items together anymore. that is what i have found to be the most difficult.

I quit 16yrs ago, wow it was tuff. tried cold turkey at least a dozen times; it wouldn't work for me. The patch's along with a goal in mind if i quit. first year was the worst. seeds, rock candy or anything to occupy my mind. now i can't stand anyone smoking around me. takes about a year to clean your system out. I never did get my taste buds back, so i could taste/savor food.

good point made about a goal..2 packs a day is about 3500 bucks a year....... can pick up a real nice tractor for that.....

I smoked 27 years and was up to 2 1/2 packs per day of More Reds (100mm long with brown paper). Quit in 1985, cold turkey. Carried a half pack in shirt pocket, and lighter in pocket for 1 year as a just-in-case measure. Could not have done it without carrying the dryed out pack and lighter. Was really tough for first 6 months. Craving lasted for about 2 or 3 years. Hardest thing I ever done in my life; but you can do it. Worst time for several years was when I would hav a nice shot of single-malt Scotch. My brain associated the Scotch and the smoke. Best thing I ever done. Good luck. Tom

I have never smoked much, a few cigars a year but my wife smoked 1-2 packs a day for over thirty years. She tried every gimmick that would come along. None of them would last for very long. She really , deep down in her heart, did not want to quit. She always was doing it because some one was on her to quit.

This last fall she spend a week in the hospital with congestive heart failure. They made her quit while she was there and she has not had one since. She says this is the first time she really want to quit. The heart problems scared her. She had a rough first few weeks but is doing good now.

My paternal Grand Mother smoked every day for over fifty years. The day my Grand Dad died from lung cancer she threw away all the cigarettes and quit. Cold turkey.

So from those I have been around it looks like you can quit several ways but the key seems to be to real want to deep in your mind.

The ones I think are funny are the ones that just quit buying. They tell everyone they have quit smoking but still bum them from all their smoking buddies.

Quit cold turkey in 1980. When you get up in the morning tell yourself, I won't smoke today. To say, I will never smoke again, thats a big promise but anyone can go for 1 day without smoking. Good luck. Joe

I"m 60 and quit 6 years ago with the patch in one try. I started smoking at 13 and was up to 2 1/2 packs a day the dead cowboy brand. Was always scared to quit then when a carton was around 50 bucks I bought the patch. I thought it was pretty easy. Chewed gum for something to do and used the patch by the instructions. I did buy a 12 day supply of the #2 step. Try it you will be glad you did.

I smoked for close to 25 years. Last summer I watched my mom die of lung cancer. It was the most horrific thing I"ve ever seen. I quit "cold turkey". I still bum one once in a while, but haven"t bought a pack since July. I tried the gum and the patch a few times over the years, but they didn"t do much for me. Just have to make up your mind to quit.

I was smoking 2 packs a day when I met my wife. On our second date, she admitted she's allergic to tobacco smoke, among other things.

Sounds dramatic, but I took a pack of cigarettes out of my shirt pocket, threw them into a trash can, and haven't touched one since. That was 48 years ago.

Anyone who says they want to quit smoking, but can't, simply hasn't had the right motivation.

I quit smoking and dipping copenhagen last March. I have no desire or want for any tobacco at this time.

I used some nicorette gum for about 2 weeks.

You got to be honest with yourself about quitting. If you really want to quit, you'll find a way.

You are right about us not having a clue. I grew up listening to my dad cough for half an hour every morning and I never wanted to smoke. Still, I have seen a lot of people quit. It took my daughter five years to quit after my dad died of lung cancer, and she tried everything. Like the other guys said, find your motivation and keep it in mind. You will make it.

3 weeks now without a cigarette (1 Jan). Wore the patches the first week. Skin got dried out and itched. So stopped using them. No problems so far. Just hang in there......

Hello Animal. I smoked for 19 years. Was up to 3 packs of marlboros a day. I had my last one at 9:00 am april 15 2007 and never looked back. Was it easy, NO. I used the patch(generic walmart brand one). The first 6 weeks were tough. Saying and doing are two different things. I think the biggest thing is having the WANT to quit. Just saying your going to won't cut it. Good Luck-SHON

I quit 37 years ago and probably was one of the smarter things I've done. It was cold turkey and still carried them around with me though for a month or so afterward. I did it one hour at a time, then one day, one week, one month. Kept a toothpick in my mouth instead and still have one there alot to this day. You got to rally want to do it and have a good reason to quit. I got mad because they went all the way up to 50 cents a pack.

I should have mentioned, my father was a life long pipe smoker. He came down with throat cancer at age 71. They cured the cancer, but had to remove his voice box in the process.

The only way he could talk for the last 14 years of his life was to hold an electronic gizmo next to his throat. And, obviously, that was a mechanical sound.

I quit cold turkey in 1976. Got over it and never have had a desire for another cigarette or any other tobacco product. Did the same thing for sweets. Cold turkey is definitely the best way.

If you have made your mind up to quit , you can. You must go cold turkey and it won't be easy. It took me about 3 mths before the urge diminished. Up and until that time I was very "bitchy" and the least little thing would set me off, so beware of that pitfall. The next and worst pitfall I encountered was eating. During the quiting period, I took up eating. I gained about 50 lbs. I have since lost 30 lbs of it though, but as you get older it is harder to get it off. Good Luck.

I have been "smokeless" for 19 years now after suckin' on those things and trying to ruin my health (almost did too) for over 40 years. I had quit several times, but couldn't stay quit. Finally my doctor in "country town, USA, Gridley, California" told me to look in the mirror and decide if I was in charge of my life or the ciggys were. Being a pretty egotistical person, that worked, I quit and with God's help I've stayed quit...Quit drinking the same way.

YES YES YES I went cold turkey in 1984 and it was the best thing I could have done: Doc"S
say that the damage we have done to our lungs will heal by them selves to a point, Because we are no longer puting toxins in our lungs.
The food will tast better,no more smokie clothes, and your sence of smell will be better.
and no more windage shortage.
THE VERY BEST THING IS YOU WILL LIVE LONGER AND SAVE MONEY FOR MORE TRACTOR STUFF OR GIVE IT TO THE BOSS {wife}FOR MORE GIRIL STUFF:
I hope this will help you out : ***REMEMBER **

Smoked for 16 years when I quit I planned it around a long vacation (12 days in Florida). Worked for me because I was out of my normal routine. Just do anything that works for you. Good Luck

The best way to quit smoking is to go to a hospital where a person is on their death bed and will be dying in a week or less from smoking related cancer. My FIL was in this condition. A horrible death to say the least.
Bladder cancer did him in. He was 59, with 2 little grandsons. He just retired 2 years earlier.
I am sure a few would quit cold turkey if they saw what I did.

after 24 years or so and after figuring I was smoking 2+ packs a day I decided I'd donated enough extra tax money to the govt.
I resolved to quit when the current pres decided he wanted more of my extra tax money and I believe the current Governor of my state was looking to do the same.
Made myself a promise to quit after "this" pack and leave them alone till I turn 80. I'm still good. Smokes were 5.50 a pack then and that 11 a day came in handy elsewhere for sure.

I quit over 2 years ago when the price of a pack went up to $4 each. At the time I was smoking 2-3 packs a day so it was adding up fast. I went to the V.A. and asked about help in stopping and they gave me the patch and I used that for less then the 30 days I was suppose to and have not looked back

So... didja quit... or am I still payin for your habit???

I quit smoking on July 1st 2002. I chewed nicotine gum, the Wal-Mart brand, it all tastes bad, for over a year. During this time my 83 yr old father was diagnosed with Lung cancer, had part of one lung removed and fell and broke his hip. It was the broken hip that killed him. He died 9 months after lung surgery. Almost to the last day of his life he would ask me if I was still quit? I am alos a recovering alcoholic and drug addict, I can tell you from my experience that NICOTINE is EVERY BIT ADDICTIVE AS COCAINE! It isn't easy any way you do it... I had tried cold turkey many times and was not successful. Try the many options available out there, one of them is right for you

I went to a hypnotist back in '90, she just talked to me about smoking , never felt like I was "under" and I left in about 15 minutes without the urge to smoke . Cost $80 back then , and it worked !!

I have no idea how much cigarettes are over there but they are notoriously expensive in The UK. I have never smoked but a friend of mine quit by the following method. She smoked about 25 a day apparently and one day she sat down with a pen and a piece of paper ( or maybe an empty cig. packet! )and calculated how much she was spending on cigarettes per day, then per week.... then per year. It amounted to over 2000 pounds!
She quit "cold turkey" the following day.

This is hard to believe and hard to take, but old preacher man told me if you really want to quit and you believe in God, pray that if you take another smoke he will take your life at that moment. He quit totally. Dave

I either had a pipe or a cigarette in my mouth all the time except when i was sleeping. i quit cold turkey back in oct,1990. gained a little weight but DAM I feel good for being 71,but then I dont know how a 71 yr old is suppose to feel other than with their fingers.

Quit cold turkey in 1967, had been buying on base for $1.90/carton, three packs per day. Quitting, was the most difficult thing I have ever done. Also the biggest accomplishment of my life, this will vary depth of addiction and what you have achieved.

For me it used to be a cigarette and a cold Pepsi. That ended 26 yrs ago when I quit Cold Turkey. It was the easiest thing I ever done, once the conscience and the sub-conscience agreed it was time to quit. If they are both not of the same mind it will be just like all the other times, I can tell you that. You have to be truely sick and tired of all the coughing and hacking, for it to work cold turkey.

HTH

Quit about 30 years ago. Things got up to about 50 cents a pack and I decided I couldn't afford any longer.
For me, the main problem was that without a cigarette to suck on, my mouth always seemed to want something to do. Kinda by accident I got some sassafras tree roots, about pencil size, washed the dirt off and cut them into one-inch lengths, leaving the bark on. I'd keep one of these things in my mouth like a dip of snuff for hours. I think they may be mildly narcotic in addition to having a nice taste. Worked for me, won't say it would for you.

Dec of 2010 I decided to quit. I didn't like spending more for cigs at the grocery store than for food.I got the patches from the VA. On 1 Dec I took 10 cigs out of a pack and laid them on the Kitchen counter. My goal was to smoke only 10 a day, and keep lowering it. I didn't carry a lighter or cigs anywhere had to get one from the kitchen. I would "cheat and not have one until 2 pm so I couls have more in the evening.
In two weeks I was down to 6 a day, Then by Christmas, 3 a day.
I planned on quitting on 1 Jan but Christmas I said well I can do without 3 a day so I started on the patches. Haven't had a cigarette since.
I put $5 a day in a jar and it's still in the bookcase and there is over 1900 dollars in there. I'm waiting til I have 5000 there for a really nice Parker or AH Fox double shotgun. And it will be a FREEBIE!

Ya gotta want to. Not, Well I know I should. When you make up your mind you want to, you will. Untill then nothing will work. I quit march 18 91. Have never wanted one since. Carried half a pack in shirt pocket for 2 weeks. Wife quit 10 years ago. Same story. Good luck With your mission

Used to smoke 3 packs of Marlboros and a pack of Winchesters a day. Woke up one morning and said I was going to cut back. In the next year, I think I had about three packs. The next couple years I would bum one here and there. Haven't had one since. That was about thirty years ago. I still say that I just cut back but didn't quit. Someday, I might want one more.

I've quit twice, 3 months and most recently 15 months. (started again, but that's another story)

I wouldn't recommend cold turkey, I did that. The withdrawal seriously affected my mind for 3 solid days before the symptoms go away. I wasn't a very nice person to be around. Your mileage may vary.

I would say use the patches in the steps they recommend, I use them now when I need to be nicotene-free for more than 3 hours. Unfortunately they're as expensive as the cigarettes.

I've heard the Chantix works well too though I have no first hand experience with it. Most health plans cover it on a one-time basis.

"but if you have never smoked you really do not have a clue"

I respectfully disagree. I grew up with a late big brother who was a heavy smoker. Always had a cig in his mouth and one burning in the disgusting ash tray. It was hell breathing all that second hand smoke while trapped in a car with him. Made me sick. He even smoked while gassing up the Farmall. Luckily that didn't kill him but a stroke did. I never smoked but all that second hand smoke likely contributed to the loss of my left lung. Angry? Bitter? Yes. I have a clue.

I did. Not because I wanted to, but had to.

Guy worked with was off on disability for a good part of the year, and I ran into him when he got back, asking what happened. He too smoked, and one day had a heart attack and nearly died. I don't recall now, triple or quadruple bypass. He told me the story. Now, I smoked and enjoyed by didn't enjoy it at the same time. Went to bed that night, sound asleep, woke up like someone was standing on my throat. Was like my throat closed up. I sat up, gasping for breath, my throat opened up, could breath, went back to sleep. Next night, exact same thing happened. Scared the crap out of me, so I quit smoking right then and there.

Now here's the funny part. A week later I was out cutting wood, and that night when got undressed to take a shower, had three ticks embedded in me. I still had that pack of smokes right where I left them when I quit a week before, so lit one up to put heat near the ticks to get them to back out, and it tasted lousy, but the dang cigarette kept going out because of that chemical treated paper they have now to make them go out if you're not puffing on them so don't burn the house down. So three ticks, and lousy tasting cigarette that was of no use either way.

Since that time, I have only had the urge to light one up twice I think, real bad, but I didn't. A while later, urge gone. My doctor told me that the most successful smoke quitters are the ones that quit cold turkey, but as someone else said, you have to want to.

Been a couple of years for me, so good luck. Lungs feel a ton better, and now my girlfriend and I are far more active at a lot of things that were slowing down, if you know what I mean. That alone should be reason to quit smoking.

Mark

Smoking, not a problem for me, I never liked it. But, as a nicotine addict I can understand. I'd chew in my sleep if I could. Nothing like some unflavored all natural straight burley twist and a cup of coffee. I quit for 2 years once, gained 80 pounds :/ so I went back. Managed to lose 60 of it.

Id though I was going to die with a chew in my mouth. May still. Significant other is going to have to quit smoking. I made the offer and Im good for it, she quits smoking I'll quit chewing.

I do like the nicotine lozenges. But, I use them for placed I dont feel its polite or proper to chew. Not sure thats a good plan but nothing like the tobacco right after the 3rd cup of strong black coffee or after a really good steak for supper... Ill miss it but it is a 120 bucks a month.... Good luck!

73 days now without a cigarette. I had smoked for about 51 years, and only quit one time back in the late 60's for a couple months, then started back again. I was always a heavy smoker, and the last couple of years I had gotten way worse, and noticed my breathing had gotten a lot worse, too. I got patches from the VA. What amazed me was that after only three or four days, the cough and wheezing completely went away. Quitting hasn't really bothered me all that much. I guess the worse time for me is in the morning with the first cup of coffee, as others have said, and I still have an urge once in a while. I had just made up my mind that it was time to quit. Not saying I am out of the woods yet, but have made a good start, and you can too. Best of luck to you.
