So im lookin at a 97 Ford F250 4x4, thing has a 460 7.5 engine in it. What do you'll get as fuel mileage with this..Im replacing an old 72 chevy 350 4 bbl.

Well i can ot say for that truck but the 88 F350 4X4 that i had would do 14 and maybe a shade better out on the road with just the truck and it weighed in at 7500 lbs . empty . 4.10 gears with a five speed . with the gooseneck empty 12 most times loaded 10 and when i say loaded i meant LOADED coming back from sales There maybe four semi mount plows and a couple disc and what ever else i could stack on . There maybe two tractors with two sets of duals . If it would fit and did not stick out more then two feet on the sides it was loaded. I put over two hundred and some thousand miles on that truck till i got the goofy idea that i wanted a Dodge with a cummings . It get a mile less to a gallon then the 460 did.

Between 6 and 8 miles a gallon. Had new 95 with a 460, 5 speed, and 3.55 rear end. You could pull or pass anything but the gas station. Good pickup though traded it for new 97 with PowerStroke, automatic, and 4.10 rear end. Get about 16 miles to gallon.

I was told that those get 9 MPG, empty. That is expensive. The Chevy 454 gets 9 city, 10 hwy. That is bad too. I couldnt imagine having a truck like that unless you were making money with it, hauling, contractor, whatever.

I have an 89' with the 460. I can't tell you what kind of MPG I get because it hurts too much when I try to calculate it :)

I can tell you that 9MPG, unloaded, on the highway would be doing good.

My old 94 F250 4x4, ext cab had that motor with a 5 speed.... miss that truck.
But don"t miss the mileage. 10 to 12 loaded or unloaded.

If you do get it replace the exhaust with a true dual with 3" or go to a single 4". Those engines were way restricted on exhaust. Also change the o2 sensors and with those mild changes you should see 12 or better empty and a solid 10 or better loaded. Also check the manifolds for cracks with the exhaust choked as it is it builds crazy heat in the manifolds. Most people don't let the truck idle to cool them down and POP now you have cracked manifolds.

Just a note that the first year that the 460 went to multi-port fuel injection was 1989. Those commenting on the older carburated 460s may have a different experience. EFI brought more horsepower, but worse fuel economy. I'm not sure if they got better on gas mileage toward the end of production (1997 was the last year?), but I doubt it.

I've had one since 97 and changed the exhaust as soon as I bought it. Has 150000 miles now. Always got about 12 unloaded. 10ish loaded. I changed the engine last year and built me a 514 cid "stroker" engine. Didn't seem to affect the loaded mileage much but did lower my empty mileage about 1.5. Pulls better. Mine has really been a good truck. Wish I could buy another new one.

Be prepared to buy ALOT of gas. Got a 97 at work and its very thirsty. I think 10 empty would be a very good day, load it down and watch the gas gauge move.

I had older models with 454 and 460 and they didn't seem to matter empty or loaded ? around 8 MPG.

I once had a 88 with the 460 in it. Great running, driving, and pulling truck. It would get only 10 to 11 mpg loaded, empty, fast, or slow.
