exhaust gasket replacement

Case IH 1680 combine with the Cummins engine. The exhaust gaskets are leaking, so I need to replace them. Have until the first part of July to get it done, so I don't have to do it all at once. I was thinking I could put some penetrating oil, (maybe Kroil, I've heard good things about it) every couple days and let it set to get it soaked up real good. Do this for a couple weeks maybe. Then would it be a good idea or not to start it up and get it warmed up good and then try to loosen the bolts while it is hot? Always hear about people putting heat to something to try to get it loose. Was just wondering if starting the engine to get it hot would do the same thing? Any other ideas would be most welcome.

I have used the torch to get manifold s off,I heated nuts red hot and put a wrench on them and been successful,I've tried penetrating oil and cold wrenching and broke the stud off..you never know but I have had more luck with the torch in my hand.

The purpose of heating is to warm the nut and not the bolt as the heat will expand the nut making it easier to turn. Running the engine will warm everything uniformly and not help much. From your post it sounds like you have cap screws. Hit them on the end with a hammer to jar them. If you heat them let them cool before trying to loosen as if warm they will expand in the head and be tighter. If you think they feel like they will break cut the heads off the bolts and remove the manifold. This leaves the bolt to get a hold of to remove. If they break they will most likely be flush or below surface and need to be drilled out. Good luck.

One of the handiest tools I have is a little drive impact tool. It will accept any 1/2" socket, and you put it on the nut or bolt, twist it with your hand, so there's not much torque on the subject, and hit the head with a hammer. It's like a small impact gun, but handheld and you can feel the nut or bolt coming loose as you strike it without breaking it off. I think the vertical impactforces the threads slightly into the bore to help break the friction of the threads as it very slowly backs the tension off of them. Once the nut or bolt is broken loose, a regular ratchet or wrench finishes the job. Seems to work most of the time, and is great for those stubborn jobs you don't want to mess up early on.

the local caseih shop uses a loctite product that freeze shocks the bolts on cummins manifolds. they said that its cut down on breaking the bolts by quite a bit and it works better than heating them. also when you get the manifold off check it with a straight edge. one of our magnums was warped and it needed 40thousands planed off to get it straight so the new gaskets would seal properly.
