I have had the tractor for a few years now. I use it every summer mowing pastures. I am looking to begin to restore it as it belonged to my grandpa and my dad. The serial number by the clutch housing is 3271WI. i can not find it anywhere on line and i would really like to know the year so i can begin ordering parts I need for it. Thanks

1941.A W6 is a W6....There may be differences
between early and late, but not much. They were made
in the'40s(39-53?).When you need parts,if they ask
for SN,thats all you need, not year mfg.Look to the
left-serial numbers...

I"ve got my grandpa"s 41 M. It"s maintained but not restored. There"s something about wear"n more paint off of the things he was wearing paint off, using the same cracked steering wheel,etc.. On the left side of this home page there is a place to look up serial numbers. Looks like yours is a 41.

Hmmm....glad to hear you're using and apparently enjoying your W-6. I spent a lot of hours on the '48 W-6 that was our big tractor on the farm where I lived and worked in the early 1950's. It got "souped up" to over 50 horsepower a short time after we got it in 1950. The "Old 6" and I did most of the plowing and fitting crop ground while my uncle did the planting and "light work" with the '50 Farmall H we had farming around 300 acres . Hauled more than a few loads of manure in a New Idea No.12 spreader pulled by the '48 W-6 too...a lot of it with the Heat Houser on because of the weather. "Old 6" could wallow in the mud and snow pretty good....a lot better than the H.

Wow, What did you do to get over 50 HP? That's seemingly impossible from that engine. Even the W-9 didn't have that much HP.

Looks like a very late 41 model. '42 started with 3718. Unless it's a Super W-6. Then it would have been built in 1953.

First overhaul the IH dealer mechanic installed an M & W high power piston and sleeve kit, M & W Govenor kit and shaved some off the head, exchanged the magneto for a Delco distributor and did some carburetor modifications. I don't know if it dyno'ed 50 horse after that, it was sure a lot stronger...but never sounded just right so in less than a year the same mechanic at the IH Dealership put in an overbore IH kit (don't think it was firecraters, they didn't have them yet then...high altitude pistons I think) that along with another valve grind, head and carburetor work was supposed to bring it up to Super M power..and I guess it did, it then dyno'ed over 50 horse with a new tune up of the other non-standard stuff it already had from the first soup up...We wanted all we could get, we were doing a lot of custom silo filling with a field chopper and big wagons that pulled hard when loaded. We had 14-30 6 ply Goodyear Super Sure Grip rear tires on it with 75% cloride fill and 6.50-16 8 plys up front...it was a pretty good horse. You could pull the 3-16's faster than ever...4th gear if you wanted, but just too fast... 3rd anywhere. Good thing gas was cheap then, it was thirsty...about like my 60 horse John Deere G toy I've got now...4 gallons plus an hour plowing.
