Muffler hole

Were Regular mufflers ever cast with a hole in back as shown in this photo from ebay? It almost looks "too perfect" to just be a piece knocked out of it. Could not find an answer in our Todd Markle Farmall book...as it does not have a lot of details on mufflers. Thanks if anyone can help.

The so called muffler, I called it an echo chamber, on the regular went down, then out above the frame rail. Since the outlet was at the bottom, no water could collect inside.
Have no idea about the hole in pic.

but i thought those sit sideways like the 10-20 muffler on the btm. so i cant see rain getting in. many tractors have a drain hole right in the manifold.

Thanks for your replies everyone. Willie, you are right about the way they sit (photo here is ours as we found it when purchasing). Wondered about some moisture purpose, but as Willie says any moisture should drip out the front opening since it is at the bottom. Also wonderd about a bullet hole being a possibility... but someone would have had to shoot into the front of the muffler via the opening then, as the muffler hangs down in front of the engine block - so it could not have been shot from the backside. But you would think it would have cracked up cast iron, not shot so cleanly through.

My husband had in all torn down in less than week from when we bought it. Recently had the head gone through and the manifold planed. He is currently building a gooseneck for his trailer though - so that has taken up a lot of time this fall/winter. Just about ready to pull that out of the shop and get back to playing with the Regular. We have purchased about all the parts we need - he says she may be running by the end of summer, but won't be ready for a plowing show until 2013 (once it is actually running, he wants to work her around home to get all the bugs out). So the F20 gets to go plowing this coming summer.
He's also been reading up and disassembling the E4A mag and the R carb to learn about them - as they are new to him. It has been a really fun process! Will almost be kinda sad once she is running and we are all done with internet searches and junkyard runs for parts. Though, then we will be able to take it to shows and parades - so a new kind of fun begins.
