Just at the farm store and saw a window pellet stove. A little larger than a window a/c unit. About $1200. Anyone seen one in use? I wonder how long you would have to use it to make up for it in gas/fuel oil/electricity costs.

You would be better off to just buy a full size unit to heat your whole house.
Wood pellets cost 1/2 of Propane to run. Assuming propane is $1.80 gallon.
I dont know about you but I would rather give my business to Americans that produce wood pellets rather than greedy oil companies and the Arabs that produce Propane.
The electric is about 1kw to run a pellet burner.
I have a US stove 45,000 btu pellet burner. Right now in my living room it is 72F (yes the pellet burner is running) And it is about +15f outside. Main Furnace is broke right now due to bad heat exchanger.
I have never seen the window unit you are talking about.
You can buy the full size pellet burners for $1500 or so, look online on where to purchase.

What ever became of the stoves that burned shelled Corn..??
Always thought that would replace the pellet..

Ron.

You would be well advised to buy a stand alone multi fuel stove that is designed to burn both corn or pellets. That window unit has been tried and talked about in both Hearth.com and i burn corn.com.
it has only 30,000 btus and a small hopper which means you will be adding fuel often. It is not a easy stove to maintain.

The United States imports about 10% of the propane consumed each year, with about 70% of that coming from Canada via pipeline and rail.

Not everybody can get pellets for $125 a ton though. I got pellets this year at $200 and thought I got lucky because corn was so expensive these last few years.

Before you buy a window pellet burner (or any heater), you might want to plug in your local fuel costs into this calculator to see what your costs would be with different fuels. http://www.builditsolar.com/References/Calculators/Fuels/FuelCompare.htm
