big rotivator

My neighbour called me over yesterday to look at his 10" machimo (sp) rotivator. He is changing the seals on the tine shaft in the gearbox (drive side of rotivator).
There are two identical seals side by side which sit against the shaft befor the bearing. These are to keep the oil in the gear box and I assume keep the dirt out.
Question, what way should the seals sit? The flat edge on the seals should be facing which way. Should they both be the same?
I"m not even really sure why there are two seals other than maybe one for oil and one for dirt? If this is the case then the sealing edge should face the oil and the other sealing edge should face the tines - dirt? Thing is they were installed by the manufacturer completly opposite - but maybe there is a reason
Any advice appreciated? Thanks, Grant

I would install them both pointing toward the oil. A seal facing the dirt is more likely to collect and hold the dirt. Also, I don't think the MFR. would have spec'd an oil seal for that purpose. For dirt you want what they call an 'exclusion' seal, a seal with a large lip that either rotates with the shaft, or can be pressed into a housing so the shaft rotates within it. If the seal has a spring on it, the dirt will eventually rust it off of there anyway. With the flat side of the seal against the dirt, it will trap a minimum of dirt, and protect the inner seal at the same time. There should be either scrapers or a vine knife, make sure these are in adjustment, as they help keep the dirt away from the seal. Every little bit helps.

Thanks Fritz, Thats what we decided to do. I think the seals will sit on the shaft better this way also - they will be in a bit further and on new shaft metal.

Good point about keeping the dirt out - it actually shouldn't get in here but...it always does.
Thanks, Grant
