CA Model Serial # 34638 29364

I have both of the above # tractors and they both
have what I call a secondary clutch lever. It is a
hand lever clutch on the right hand that is connected to the right axle only. Both tractors have the exact same setup. I have all the proper books and none of them show this lever or explain anything about it. I talk to anyone or anybody about this setup and I always draw a total blank.
Can anyone out there please explain what this is or what the benefit of it might be. I w3ant to enter the local tractor pulls this spring but am not sure if this is a "weak link" on what seems to be a good little tractor.
Appreciate any info,and Thank You,
Ralph.

It gives you the ability to keep the PTO running yet to stop movement. Not quite a live PTO setup but close.

Ralph! The lever is a clutch, which allows the pto to continue running, if you want to stop, without pushing the foot clutch in. If you use the foot clutch, the pto will stop, till the clutch is released. If you are mowing, or bush hogging, or doing simular work, with your pto, then you might want to use the hand clutch. It actually works like a broken right axel! I have been told that people weld the clutch halves togeather, for pulling, or because their too cheap to repair them. Personally, I like them, and didn"t think the repair work was all that hard! Mine was replaced last fall.

Your 34638 is a 1955 model, the 29364 is a 1953 model. The hand clutch on the right side is a dry Lambert clutch, veeeery spendy to repair! It disconnects the right rear wheel from the power train, which allows the tractor to stop fwd/rear motion, while letting the hyd and pto operate- thus it gives live power. The op manual, as well as the I&T AC 11 service manual should have details on the clutch. It is possible to eliminate that clutch by replacing it with a solid drive shaft, same as the left side..............but WHY??? considering the value of it. Some choose, when the discs fail, to weld the clutch halves together, or bolt them together, rather than replace the spendy discs that make the system such a vast improvement over the predecessor, the non-live Model C.

It is a LIVE pto! anytime you can stop wheel motion and maintain hyd/pto operation, it is live, not matter how it is accomplished!

Right makes them have the ability to stop and the pto keep running. I thought they were great. First time I used one on our neighbor's M IHC. Never knew one to give any trouble except to rust up and not release. A UB Moline used one too. at least twiced the hp of your CA. But does weigh something, a C bull pinion should work. Don't know for sure. Vic

That lever is for live pto. As great an idea as live pto was, this is the stupidest setup. I have a CA that I plow my garden with using the mounted AC two bottom plow. What a treat to stop at the end of the row and have to clutch with my right hand and raise the plow with my...other right hand? Why they put both levers on the right is beyond me. So, I have to clutch with the right and at the same time reach accross witht the left to raise the hyds. this is why AC never conquered the world.

The clutch in the axle works the same as if the tire the side side the clutch is on was spinning.

The final drives can be switched to the opposite sides if you want the lever on the other side. One case where it is a good idea to switch final drives is when running the round baler of its time. Right hand on the steering wheel, left hand on the clutch lever as you look at the baler over your left shoulder. You have a knock out plate on the left side in the floor pan.
The axle clutch was a week point in my CA. For pulling you can replace the clutch assembly with a solid pinion shaft without a problem. With many CA"s being sold for parts it might be easier to buy a CA final drive with the solid axle for pulling. Easy swap back and fourth if you see the need for the clutch in the future. I have a CA out back with both side solid pinion shafts.

This was copyed direct from the manual that came with the CA tractor when new.

I mounted a L306 Woods belly mower on my CA about thirty years ago. The hand clutch allows you to creep the tractor through heavy grass while maintaining full pto speed to the mower..

One tough lawn mower...
