2002 Ford Excursion

Wife and I are going to look at a 2002 ford excursion tonight, 7.3 powerstroke, auto, limited edition, 4X4, from the listing and talking to the dealer, it seems to be loaded. Shows 140,670 miles, and they said I could get it for 13,700, out the door for 14,800 and change.......If it is what they say, we will likely buy it.....anything to look out for? Awhile back i posted wanting to know about the 6.0.....definatley staying away from those!!!!!Thanks Guys, appreciate the input as always!!!

Google 6.0 and 7.3 powerstroke and scroll down and click on the utube. It will tell you everything about the two engins.

Sparkie, If the Excursion is @ a FORD Dealer, go ahead and opt for ?Fords or whomever they use the most Extended warranty. (IMO Engine/Drive-train) I do not have a problem with the mileage or the 7.3. the engine is basically bullet proof and the drive train is solid but there are wear items....
But the truck IS fastly approaching 200 K and the **Front Hub Assembly will need to be replaced on each of the front corners sometimes soon.....They Ain't Cheap, did my 01 F-350 this past summer (1 in the spring, 1 in the early Fall) close to $1400 all said and done
**Tranny has it been serviced or replaced. Mine just cleared the 3yr warranty mark on a Brand New Ford Tranny 3 yrs ago $3300
**Water seperator Ford or Motorcraft Item only $800 just done over Christmas. (mine was leaking)
Some other maintenance items too that need to be done here in short order
**Front sway bar intermediate connecting rod (connect the end of the sway-bar to the frame, underneath the cab @ about where your feet are, the Grommets/ bushing just deteriate and go bad one side is replaceable the other is not)
Not trying to scare You off from the truck But there are a few pricy items that can bite you later, get a Motor and Drive-train Extented warrenty. My 01 F-350,7.3/Auto, crew-cab, 4X4, Longbox, Single rear wheels has 227000 K on it now. I will not get rid of it for a long, long, long time!
Hope this helps, Hollar at me later if You like and I will visit with you about it. (512) 577-3837.
Later,
John A.

I'd rather be out the door for the 13,700 myself but if you need something like that I'd pay for it. I mean its not like you can just go find another one down the road. Its got a 7.3 in your going to have to pay for it, but that you already know. Good luck.

While it is in NADA price range I tend to agree that it is overpriced.

It's a 10 year old vehicle that gets lousy fuel mileage and is expensive to maintain. It will only appeal to a very specific market segment and finding a person that wants one in that market that is willing to pay that price isn't that common.

NADA is written by dealers for dealers to price their product to consumers - which way do you think their pricing is going to favor?

It will be just as hard for the dealer to find another buyer that wants that specific vehicle. The Super cab and Crew cab Superduties are more common and cheaper and handier in most cases. The Excursion appeals mainly to those that need to tow a heavy bumper hitch load and haul 6 or more people - that's a pretty limited market.

Friend of mine had one of those he sold 2 years ago. Was in excellent condition and had the V-10 engine. Sold for $6500 dollars and it took a while to sell it.

It is 10 years old. It can't do any work except haul people around and pull a trailer, not even a 5th wheel can be hooked to it. Whatever you give for it you will have to drive the value out because you likely will never be able to get much on a trade or outright sale. Offer 9,500 and see what happens.

7.3 is a good engine but repairs can hurt the pocket. Remember, someone traded it off for a reason.

Couple years back, banks would not finance anything over 100K miles. Find out why. Ten years old ain't no prize either. Look at Kelley blue book and see what trade in is worth. Thats all I would ever pay. Trade in is fair. Why would you pay more than dealer.? Dave, nother sparky.

A friend of mine traded his 2003 F-250 with the 7.3 Diesel, the dealer gave him 11 or 12K on the trade in. And....it had 110K miles on it and was rusty.
He bought a new 2011 F-150 with the eco-boost.

Just bought one for my son. That's about what they're bringing. We looked at several- all had 130-140,000 miles, and were in the $13-14k range. All were sold within a week. We found one at a small dealer in Iowa (we're in IL). It's an '02 Limited, 7.3 4x4, bigger wheels/tires and a few other small upgrades, with 64,000 miles. We locked in a deal within 30 minutes of when the ad hit the net. He was asking 21,900 and his phone was very busy. We traded in a '01 F250 4x4 7.3 shortbed XLT with 141,000 miles, needing tires and a few other things. Paid $9500 diff. Not a steal, but we went up a year, lots of options, and 77,000 less miles, so not all bad. Truck is in great shape, and drives like new. Low mile 7.3's are very hard to find, but are out there. We spent about a month looking.

The positive....Its the largest SUV on the road.
The negative....Its the largest SUV on the road.

In other words, it takes a little fuel and rides like a lumber wagon, BUT... you can haul anything, tow anything and pass anything in your way while doing it.

It went pretty well. We are going to pick it up in a bit. $14,500.00 out the door. Truck is FULLY loaded. Every option avaliable. Has a bit more underbody rust than I wanted, but nothing I can"t stop/fix/repair. Really seems to be a good truck

We brought our Excursion home last night. Really seems to be a good truck. We feel we got a good buy on it, not a steal but not taken either. Wife drove it half way home, then she "let" me drive it.......this is for her to drive.....and it doesent look like I will get to drive it much!!!!
