Sometimes Ya Need a Break (Pics)

After working on the newest acquisition (Allis Chalmers WD-45) relentlessly over the last month, I decided I needed a break and decided to work on something different for awhile My buddy and I took a short one hour drive to purchase a couple of Norton Commandoes (Mark 3 Interstate and a Mark 2 Fastback). I guess it's time to bust out the Whitworth wrenches and sockets. This will be a nice change of pace I think. Here are a couple pics I snapped after we got home and unloaded the bikes.

That takes me back to the days when I rode a BSA single 500 cc. Good bike aside from the Lucas electrics, the Prince of Darkness. Enjoy, Pete

Billy I like your motorcycle garage I'm jelous of all your room. I try to work on my bikes at my house in my garage. With a lift table, a couple lathes, a mill and two motorcycle projects going on, and my 47 Indian Chief. I need to store my other bikes in my barn. Looks like you have a couple good projects with the Nortons. Stan

Looking at the pictures brought back memories of a guy I knew that back in the late 1950’s he rode an Ariel Square 4 with straight pipes, on a still night you could hear him coming down the highway when he was about 2 miles away.

I had an 850 Norton. 1975 I think. Best bike ever to take through some S-curves. When you would sit at a stop light it would shake so much your vision would be blurred but as soon as you accelerated that rubber mounted twin would smooth right out. No vibration buzz like the Japanese bikes.

I had a 1952 ES2 Norton. Sure can relate to those miserable Lucas electricals. Good thing I had excellent night vision back then.

One of the classiest bikes ever built. A friend had 750 Norton with cafe racer fiberglass on it. I rode it a few times. It pulled from low end like a locomotive. He gave it a going over with the whitworths. before nearly every ride.

Ooooooooooo, I am SO jealous! "8^) Always wanted a S'Norton.

Still, one does what one can. The 650 vertical twin is a classic machine. After three years of looking I finally found one that fit my budget and was reasonably close by. Nearly finished with the overhaul, should be able to crank it up and start tuning next weekend.

just emailed my brother to see if mom still has pics around.... Got a 65 norton electraglide in a shopping cart when I was 14... Put it all together and had a ball with it, friend of the family "helped" me paint it a 14 coat metalflake job.... 4th gear went out and I wasn't mature (??) enough to fix it myself and couldn't afford a shop so sold it to a guy that prolly still has it......

There is actually a gorgeous Ariel Square Four that resides in that shop too. I haven't been on that one yet, but I was lucky enough to take the Velocette for a spin a couple weeks back on a warm weekend.

I don't know a single person who doesn't refer to the Lucas ignition as "The Prince of Darkness". They were a miserable S.O.B. weren't they. Anything that is going to be a daily rider we convert to electronic ignition. I'm glad the days of points and mechanical manual retard/advance are a long ways behind us! You had to be a whale of a mechanic to keep some of these old guys goin'...and that's if they were in good mechanical shape to start with!
