Speaking of deer hunting...

My neighbor hunts my property and always brings me a deer. Before I take it to be registered, he says, "Don't tell 'em it was killed with a rifle" which it never was, but he always gives me those instructions. Why can't you kill a deer with a rifle? Also, I'm hearing you can't eat deer killed in a nuisance permit. You have to leave them lay for the buzzards. Anyone up on Ohio law? I have deer in my yard like some people have Whiteface in a feedlot. Thanks, Fritz

In Mo. we have certain portions of deer season devoted just to archery or muzzleloaders. Not supposed to use a rifle during these portions. During the archery season a hunter would be in total camo, face paint, etc. too much chance of someone with a rifle killing an archer, not to mention it is not sporting.

Archery season is much longer her in Mo. to account for the difficulty of killing one with a bow.

Another thing, he is asking you to check it. The person baggin the deer is the one that needs to check it in. He is asking you to break the law so he can keep his tags and keep hunting. If you were to get caught it would be a very expensive deer.

Because it's not legal to use a rifle to hunt deer with in Ohio. Shotgun, primative weapon (muzzleloader) or pistol of certain caliber. Both you and him would be on deep trouble, in fact I don't believe you can legally check in a deer that he has shot. Beginning this year, there are no check in stations in Ohio. Everything is done via the internet now.

That's sure gonna cut down on the beer sales

I stumped an Ohio game warden when I asked and showed him a 44 mag single shot rifle that can only use pistol rounds in it and has a 26 inch barrel. I asked why its legal to use a 44 mag with a 11 inch barrel and not the rifle. He got his book out and could not really answer my question. He said that it being a rifle would be more accurate than the pistol and being a single shot I don't know why it wouldnt! He told me he would ask at the state level and get back with me, He did and said the only reason it was not legal was it was a rifle but they may allow it someday. Kind of dumb if you ask me. NY has had similar oddball things in their past, but has got MOST of them straightened out. The typical reason for rifles not being allowed is because of their extended range and the possibility of ricochets, misses or overpenetration causing problems. Typically shotguns and pistols have a shorter range due to their using larger projectiles at lower velocities. A pistol that shoots a rifle cartridge can turn that on its head, as can a rifle that shoots a pistol cartridge. The T/C Contender, Savage Striker, and Remington XP-100 are all pistols that shoot rifle cartridges--in the case of the Contender, often very powerful rifle cartridges--but in NY they're all legal in shotgun-only zones as, presumably, they're not all that common and they are still only typically used at fairly short ranges and for reasonably "sure" shots. I've never heard of a case in NY of this causing a problem, though the potential is there. On the flip side, there are plenty of rifles that shoot pistol cartridges, typically the .357 magnum, .44 magnum, and .45 Long Colt. The theory there is that the longer barrel increases velocity enough to make these cartridges a threat to ricochet or overpenetrate. Again, it may or may not be the case, but you've got to draw the line somewhere.

Posting from down here in NYS"s Southern Tier.

The "No Rifle" thing never made any sense to me. I could go out all summer and shoot woodchcucks in open fields with my .223, 22/250 or .243 but come deer hunting time, no way could we use a rifle. So I went to a Contender and took several deer with a Contender in 6.5 JDJ and .375 Winchester Magnum. They can shoot as far and about as accurately as a rifle.

Now we can use rifles for deer hunting. If I"m hunting the woods. I use my NEF in 45/70. If I"m going to be where there might be longer shots, I use my Stevens 200 in .308.

A lot of this crazy, anti-rifle legislation originally came from input by groups who didn"t know what they were talking about.
