O/T: price for cleaning up storm damage debris?

There's an older lady who lives near me, retired, fairly low fixed income situation. She has a bunch of tree debris from a bad storm some time ago, mostly small to medium sized branches but a couple whole trees.

I"m not in a position that I can afford to go do this for free. However, I also don"t know how this kind of work is typically priced. She"s looking for a "per hour" price. It would be me working by myself and hauling brush back to my place to burn. Suggestions for pricing it in a manner that is fair for both of us?

Her son lives less than a mile up the road from her. He spent a couple hours cutting up some of the bigger stuff, gave it to his in-laws for firewood and left the rest.

Thanks,

Anthony

Find a couple of kids to help you, and go do it. Tell her you'll send her a bill, and forget it. She'll appreciate it, you'll feel better, and it'll raise you a notch in the community. "Be not slow to visit the sick and elderly, and find comfort in thy old age".

I would do it in the evenings and weekends and not charge her anything. If she was more well off then I might charge her $10 an hour and not keep real close track of the hours. A few would not get counted.

I have found that the money made in these type of things in not much and the feeling got from just doing it will last much longer.

I"m not in a position that I can afford to go do this for free.----What do you mean? You are in the perfect position to do it for free. She lives near you. If you have a chain saw already, you will have no expense other then time. Maybe $3.00 worth of fuel. If it would make her feel better, tell her you really like home baked cookies.

Let me understand this.
This old lady has a son who wont even help her pick up tree branches and stuff from a storm, but he will take the usable firewood? This guy needs to clean up the whole mess cause this lady is his mother.
If I was you I would do it for a couple of apple pies or something along those lines.
I cut down 4 large trees for the pastor of my church 2 months ago. I spent 4 hours there dropping trees and cutting up the logs for a kid that hauled it away in a trailer. I did it for free, cause I am nice.....Sometimes.

do it for free and have her feed you and your help that day or walk away......

Can't imagine that she is someone that'll be easy to work "by the hour" for or she wouldn't be asking for the quote.... Ask yourself why the junk has been laying so long and not even her kids clean it up..... I could see her watching you like a hawk and here a lot of "I know guys that coulda done that little bitta stuff in a couple hours"

Do it for a meal and/or a good feeling or move on.....

There may be a family situation here. Contact her son. Explain that his mother has asked for your help to finish the clean up, but you're not in a position to do it at no cost. However you wouldn't mind helping him, to keep the cost down. He may provide the missing link as to why he hasn't done it himself yet. In the end, you may find the best thing for you to be is; "too busy to do it by yourself".

For; say $12.00 per hour, you could offer to help her son finish the job that he started.. Ain't I mean?

I was in the same boat this past summer; only this gal didn't have a son with a chain saw. She did have a large elm tree that the city demanded removal of within thirty days. Power lines and other trees of every side.. I ended up dropping and cutting up seven unwanted trees. There was allot of my own work that could have been done instead of driving 35 miles to do hers.. I didn't charge her a dime; but then, I am 3/8 Norwegian and have a good excuse for being nearly half nuts..

Neighbor widow had trees and a double corn crib go down in a storm this summer.

I spent 3 days there with a chain saw and loader tractor with another neighbor.

We got a kind thank you for our work and we were satisfied with that.

I would do it and tell her to pay me what ever she thinks it's worth. When I do that, I get paid more than I would charge.

That pay me what you think it is worth did not work for me. 4 hours transporting and using my tractor with backhoe attachment. I said whatever you think it worth. Walked away with $ 50.00. Was not that could not have paid more.

Quote high up front. You can always go down on your price if it turns out to be easier. Slim chance you will get any extra if it turns out to be a pain.

ive don a couple of fixed income jobs, it works best if you can sit with her and discuss it, if you take in fuel time ect and still want to give her a deal, id qoute something around 10 to 12 per hour, leave the hours worked open as it will always take more time than you thought, also give her the option of breaking the work up, do some now and some after she gets her next check and so on that way she can tell you how much time she can afford each work session, and she wont be unable to eat and pay her bills too, and you will still make something too
