The internet has a site that is used by law enforcement for scrap metal theft. If you, or your local department use the site, it will automatically alert scrap buyers within a 250 mile radius of the reported theft. It does work for those of us in the enforcement end of things. It is also part of my classroom instruction for yearly valuable metals training. I'm seeing alot of messages with theft of metals and this may help you, help us.

untill they crack down on the scrapyards for accepting stolen merchandise the theives will continue to steal,...i know i'll catch flack about more laws in the wrong place, but lets face it, if you are buying new converters for scrap, and a load of manhole covers, shouldn't a light go off ????

Manhole covers yes a light should go off but...I took an old hyabine to the scrapper a week ago how would I prove it's mine to sell?

That"s just ridiculous. Manhole covers, yeah it might trip a light. Converters? How about all the fairly new cars that are totaled each year and the converters pulled for scrap?

I could live fairly well for a while on all the money our local yard has spent on security and surveillance equipment to keep from falling into this trap, but it"s not that kind of product that always gets him in a fix.

It"s old combines, corn pickers, haybines, balers, and the like from fencerows that create the problem. Like many small operators my equipment looks like it ought to be on it"s way to the yard but it works well and is well maintained.

Lets not drop the hammer on the scrap yards because they"re doing business, how about we hammer the ^%$#&^% thieves that steal and sell.

Bought a lot of stuff from the scrap dealer across the street from the plant I worked at. You would be surprised at the stuff they get from paper mills and construction projects. I have bought NEW pumps and gearboxes that were disposed of from the GP plant in Green Bay, If something is left over from a project or if they had a spare in inventory and closed the line before the spare was used they went out in the scrap metal dumpster, and I'd by them buy the pound from the dealer.

Police can't watch everywhere, all the time, so they have to crack down where the thieves congregate: At the scrapyards.

Knowingly accepting stolen goods is a crime, period. They can play ignorant, "Honest officer, I thought the guy who wheeled in here in that clapped-out 1993 Ford F150 heaped with used catalytic converters was legit! Honest!"

Come on... It's pretty obvious when someone's peddling stolen goods. You're NEVER going to legitimately show up at a scrapyard with a load of new converters removed from "wrecked cars!" Why? Because wrecked cars are ALREADY at the scrapyard!
