old oats???

I got a "good deal" on about 3/4 ton of oats last year (from the prior year)... Were next to free because they were what dropped thru screen on the combine.... Anyway, I don't like feeding them to the horses because they really don't need them and just makes them hot because they don't work... Think there is still any feed value in them or is it best to just dump them somewhere..... ...... Maybe enough in them that the hunters could use them to feed deer and wild boar if we end up with any winter??

If kept dry and the rodents didn't get to them, oats will keep for what, a decade or more and be viable, good feed. I've fed a lot of 3-5 year old oats, didn't seem to be any issue at all.

Thanks! Guess I'll hang onto them then. They have been kept in almost airtight containers....

I agree that oats correctly stored several years are still very good feed. How does a low protein, high roughage feed such as oats make a horse hot? It even very rare to founder a horse fed oats. What feed(grain type) do you feed your horses that is lower protein than oats?

hay.... got a mare that weaves if she even looks at anything other than beetpulp.... Weaving is a proplem in itself but the feed makes it worse.... for that reason, I shy from feeding it to the others......
