Old Ms you can't kill em!

No matter how hard some people try! A friend brought one over a week ago for me to restore, all four tires flat and fifteen gallon of oil in the rear end of this old girl! After three days of draining cleaning and general looking over I got it started today, rebuilt Carb.and distributor and for not running for two decades it did not seem too bad. I did not let it run long because I could not see any coolant in the radiator. I went to drain it and it had a six inch 3/8 pipe nipple that was bent over and smashed shut on the end. When I saw that I shut up the shop and came to the house for the night. It seems as though everything on this poor old tractor is mucked up like this. I swear some people should not be allowed to purchase pliars.

Back in the day though that's how it was, make or break, do or die. you couldn't afford the correct parts, so you used what you had.

At the time the M was built thet were the best reactor made and to this day they were the best tractor IHC ever made. I have 10 IHC tractors and 2 of them are M;s Also an H but the H is too small to be much good unless it has an increaded bore kit.I put new old stock flat head original bore kit in mine

The only negative thing was they both needed another gear between 4th and 5th

While I agree that they were a good tractor and the best of their day I don't agree that they were the best. Got one. Gets used maybe 20 hours a year. Soon as I can afford it it's going down the road so it can be replaced by a better tractor like a 706. I would not buy another one. Don't like how they handle, too expensive to put good hydraulics or power steering on and lacks a 3 point. Plus I myself like the looks of the 60's and newer IH tractors way better......but thats just my opinion.

I could not agree with you more on the gear split, I had a real nice M that I got just for raking hay but the gearing made it impossable to rake with and do it efficiently...
