OT-computer guru's-antivirus question

Hello. I know this has been discussed before but... I have been running Norton 360 on our 3 computers for the last couple of years. Our subscrition is about to expire in a few days. I guess it works fine other than it sure seems to slow things down when its updating. The other thing is that the cost of it seems higher than other brands. We dont do anything special other than surf the net, wife does some banking and kids do homework. What do some of you guys use that may be cheaper but but just as good? Thanks-SHON

AVAST & AVG both have work well for me for years & they are free & don't slow our computers the way McAfee & Norton did.

Microsoft Security Essentials.

Its as good as or better than any other anti-virus software out there, free or not.

It runs almost seamlessly, gets updates thru your normal Microsoft Update system, and uses very few system resources.

I can't think of any other AV that I would use or recommend.

And....it's free.

When you change from Norton. Remove the program as it will still run in the background and slow things up.

I have Avast on 5 computers and no problems what so ever. The others mentioned are good also.

Share your observations about Norton; Mcafee not much better, have used AVG but it was "glitchy" on one laptop. Finally went Microsoft Security Essentials as others said, seems to be be less of a PITA and the price was right.

smhimrod,
I've had Macafee (they won't let you go), Norton both slowed my computer.
Also had Bell security $$ mth. now I have Microsoft Security Essentials it's free as others have said.

If install Microsoft Security Essentials and you are on Dial-up you should go to someone that has High-Speed (I went to Future Shop) a basic charge for that he checked out my computer made it a little faster and installed all the packets for the updates that would take me days to download on dial-up.

I had been using AVG for quite a number of years and have used MaCaffee and Norton in the past also. I had a bad virus a while back and went to the computer store and they sold me me a program called Panda AVPro....What a WORTHLESS antivirus program. Someone on this forum recommended Spyware Doctor. I bought it and downloaded it off the internet and it worked GREAT! It got rid of all the viruses on my computer and sped my system up. I've tried to remove Panda AVPro off my computer, but I can't get rid of it. I think it's as bad as the malware I had on the computer before. Also, as soon as I installed it off the disc I bought, it went on the internet and wanted me to pay for an upgrade...what junk.
In my opinion, Spyware Doctor is worth the money.

We've got five computers here - all with the free version of Avast. Zero problems except for one virus my 8 year old got on his laptop a few weeks ago. I don't know exactly what he did to get it. It was the "Win 7 Anti Spyware" virus. Avast didn't catch it. I had to make his computer go back to and older version. I then installed the free Microsoft Security Essentials and it fixed the problem.

In regard to Norton? I've had nothing but trouble with it - but stopped using it when Windows 98 was current.

No problems since I paid for Avast..They will lower the price to around 20 dollars a year if you keep telling them no....
Also if you go to Fry's.com--they always have virus programs for 1 cent if you don't mind sending in rebate forms..changes daily from kasperby to norton to mcafee,etc.....

The computer techs at work recommended Avira & malware bytes.

We"ve used them both for over a year and have not had any viruses. Well worth the $30.

I went to Ksspersky by a recommendation from our IT guy at the previous employer, been happy with it, it doesn't slow you down and they are upfront telling you how many days are left on your subscription and won't try to get you to renew 6 months early. I just renewed for 2 years at $90 for three computers

(quoted from post at 18:23:24 12/31/11) Microsoft Security Essentials.

This is what I use and tell everyone who asks to use too. It's free and it works without bogging down your machine. What more do you want?

I use Microsoft Essentials and Microsoft Malwarebytes. This keeps the PC running uneventual of Virus or adware it seems and they are free.Tried a purchased AVG once but it slowed the PC down and caused a lock up situation at times. It would not work very well with the Windows 98 programs we used at the time.At present we use a Windows XP Pro set up.ISP is Windows Internet Explorer provided by Qwest .

Norton Antivirus 2012 and Malwarebytes Anti Malware. I don't like Norton 360 or Norton Internet Security. Too many issues.

When I run "Malwarebytes", it finish's, and says
"No threats detected". I then run "microsoft
security essentials", and it finds, and lists,
threats. that it's removed. I believe that I'll
remove the "malwarebytes"!
