I've done it many times with the high-sulfur off-road diesel. Works fine but makes fumes you're not going to appreciate. Can't comment on the dyed low-sulfur that many states are using now. Here in NY, our dyed fuel is still high sulfur (for heating oil) and med-sulfur for farm diesel.
 
The lighter the fuel, the cleaner it burns. Comparing #2 diesel to kerosene is like running a forklift in a warehouse on gasoline instead of LP.
Don't be such a cheapskate and filling your lungs with partiality burned hydrocarbons.
 
They sell heaters at lowes and other stores that use diesel fuel,or kerosene.My brother in law has one in his garage with no fumes.
