JD A pulling power

Depends on the A. Unstyled A will pull a 2 bottom nicely, but not 3. Early styled will handle a 3 bottom in good conditions, but in tough going 2 bottom will be about right. Late styled gas A will handle a 3 bottom about anywhere. Belt HP of A's went from 23 in 1934 to 39 in 1947 on gas, big difference. All my comments apply to stock tractors. Lots of ways to get an A to make a LOT of horsepower.

Sorry, I was basing that on a late styled A. An early one like you will have would pull 3 in a sandy loam type soil but would be worked pretty hard/ maybe slow going in 1st in a heavy type of soil.

Aftermarket 3pt dont do a good job of plowing. How are you going to level the plow and have draft, get your wheels set, How much do you plan on plowing. Now if you can get the original 3pt for that tractor and the plow made for it you will have a workable set up but aftermarket 3pts just arent made for plowing very mUCH. just want a small area for a garden it mite work.

Glen, you have two problems for a mounted plow and at 29 max belt horse power not enough power but then that tractor unless it is highly modified will not be able to use a 3 point because you have no depth control as later tractors with power trol would have but you only have up or down with the foot pedal on the lift for the cultivators and that will not let you use even a blade let alone a plow. And you will never be able to find one of the mounted plows made for that tractor that was only a one bottom. And it was never made for the Deere 800-801 hitches as they only came out 11 years after your tractor was made. Now if you have a pull type clutch lift McCormick 3 bottom plow you can remove the back bottom and use it but if a hydrolick lift your tractor will not work with a remote cylinder.

If it's a Saginaw 3-pt., he can make all the correct adjustments and make them easier than with an 800 or 801 3 pt.

your 41 A does not have the correct drawbar frame for a three point or the right hyd control for a three point. get a pull type plow

Why bother with the time and money making an A something that it isn't?
You would be far happier with a 520 or 620 having a factory three point hitch.
You won't be spending extra $$$ to have a duplex carb, live pto, live hydraulics and maybe even power steering.
A 520 will also walk all over an A power wise on less fuel.

back when i first started farming i pulled a two bottom with mine.did a good job in most soil conditions.I would use a 16" one bottom breaking new ground and really hard clay.Didnt have any weight though which would have helped of course.I sort of aggree with the others on the three point. While their are some good kits available, the cost of them would go a long way towards buying a good trailer plow and other equipment. Went to an auction a couple of weeks ago that had a couple of good jd sycle mowers, one was a 39w,the other a model8,one brought $10 the other $12.You can still find pretty good equipment to fit that A around at a good price. And to be quite honest ,in my opinion they work better than ones that have been converted.Only advantage i ever saw at all with three point stuff was draft control, and you would have to get pretty sophisticated with a aftermarket kit to have that on a A.

Spend ALL the time it takes to get the parts that contact the soil SHINED-UP...
You will THANK yourself more than 100 times...!!!!
A rusty plow is really more like an ANCHOR than a plow...
I start with a 4 /2" angle-grinder with a cutoff blade, held at about a 30 degree angle (Wear a Mask) it will clean that rust off, right down to the Black Oxide under the rust but won't scratch through.
The Black Oxide will scour just fine..
I like to complete the job with a "Flapper-Wheel", to get any areas I missed with the cut-off wheel
May take one cutoff wheel per plow bottom..

Some think our soil here in Ohio does not "Pull Hard"..BUT...
For a Late Styled "A"--here-- you pulled 2-14" or maybe 2-16"
We pulled a 3-14", but ours had a Power Block in it..
All you needed to do was OPEN the Power adjustment and keep some gas cans at each end of the field..!
Aint it funny, how they ALWAYS run out of gas at the wrong end of the field..!!

If it has the stock low compression pistons it should be around 29 hp on the belt. Not to be compared to 29 hp in your lawn mower or 29 hp in a new compact. It's 29 hp you can tap all day long.

But it did not come with the correct type of rockshaft, what it had is the type that is all the way up or all the way down, no stopping halfway down, when you hit the foot pedal with your heal it would go either up or down depending on where it was already setting. The type of rockshaft that you could stop anyplace in the raise-lower cycle has a rod type control at the side of the seat and that did not come out untill 1945, and the drawbar would not be the type you could mount a 3 point hitch on. You need to study the on line parts book to see the differences and then the operators manual to find out how to operate it.
