SN on 60's Ford industrial - what model/year?

I"m looking at a nice 60"s Ford industrial tractor with a diesel engine, four speed forward transmission, 3 pt capability, PTO, and front end loader. The number on the lower right side of the engine block is 310609. It has the heavy cast iron grill with emblem (missing) top center and a head light on either side. It looks like the grills I see here in the picture gallery on industrial tractors from the early 60"s. The tractor has the heavy front axle, and the whole unit is all yellow in color. There"s also a number on the top of the transmission of 310835.

Anyone have answers as to what year and model this tractor is? Thank you.

The tractor is either an 1801 or 4040. Though both models are basically the same tractor.
Serial number is stamped into the bell housing just above and behind the starter. Trouble with diesels on those models is the battery usually leaked down onto that spot and ate away the number. One clue you could look for is the color of the paint on the chassis. From the factory the 1801 would have been Red chassis with yellow tin. 4040 would have been Blue with yellow tin.
If you really want to get into some deciphering with the date codes etc ask on the Ford board.
Those guys know all that stuff over there.

310609 is the casting number for a 4 cylinder 172 cu in block, both gas and diesel, used in 1958-1959. 310835 is the casting number for a 4 speed transmission. Engine blocks are often swapped out for rebuilt units but the 172 cu in engine was last used in the 1964 model year.
