OT: water sensor alarm

Just purchased a water sensor alarm from Harbor freight for $8.55 after using a 20% coupon. Seems to work well. Put sensor in water and alarm goes off. I put the sensor in the plastic tub that washer is in. If washer springs a leak, I'll know it.

However, what if the alarm goes off and I'm not home? Got me to thinking, a dangerous thing I've told, can the alarm be modified to turn the power off to the washer? Better yet, if the alarm detects water in the basement, is there a water sensor alarm on the market that will also turn the well pump off and need manually reset?

Last winter my sister was in Florida, a pipe froze and broke. 3 weeks later someone discovered she had a major water leak in her house. Extensive damage.

Those precautions are better done by yourself. If leaving the house unattended, shut off water heater and the pump. I have had two water heaters burst, fortunately we where home, basement is unfinshed, concrete floor and drain so no dammage.

Hey George I did check the old tractor at your friends, It's a DC case just junk fellow could make a buck at scrap yard however getting it out this weather??? need a winch and trailer. On your post I have a h20 valve handy to turn off water when gone -- works for me Bill

A woman I knew years ago lived in Minnesota. They went on vacation and when they came home a flood of water came out the front door. The kitchen sink was on an outside wall, pipe froze and broke.
What I do is never run any water appliances unless someone is home. This idea doesnt help if a line breaks while you are at work. 1 thing to do is change out the washing machine hoses every 5 years. The idea you are thinking of is to have that sensor utilize an electic actuator of some kind that would shut off the water at the source, like the inlet water valve to the house.

There are auto shut off valves out there that will close your main line automatically when they sense water. I will find a link and post it.

I think this is what you are looking for.

Thanks,
I really want to be able to turn the power off to either the washer or the pump. What you posted, will turn the water off and I would need 2 of them at $100 each.

Wild Bill,
Hate to see an old tractor go to the bone yard. Been thinking of posting a pic of the tractor on YT photo adds. What do the rest of you think when it comes to a junk 1945 Case DC? Save it or scrap it?
George

Bob, I've been home and had dishwasher screw up, washer screw up, water heater, and plumbing leaks. Daughter's wash machine leaked while they were home. They need to replace the carpet and hard wood floor.

Yes turning things off while your are not home is a good idea. I think there is still a need for an auto turn off that works all the time, home or not. A little water can do a lot of damage too.

If he still hasit when ground is not so soft I will get it if it's still available Would pull dist (mag gone) and starter at min but its really shows ind humidity deteration. George have a good lords birthday celebration??

You can buy a water detector that you can program one phone number into it. Then if it detects water it will call the number you program.Look at the home stores or thr Smarthome.com.

George,
We have a pratice of whenever we are gone over night we always shut the supply line off. Gives one a lot of peace of mind. We do have a water driven back up sump pump that uses a seperate line in case the power should fail but can only be used when you have city water system. One place that I have heard of that can make a mess is when the water feed to an icemaker fails.
