Buick Park Ave, 2003, had the 'Trac Off' light come on last night after routinely braking up to a stop sign. The manual says it should go off when the button on gear selector is pressed, but that's just not happening. The manual also says it could be a brake problem, but the car still runs and brakes as normal.
Anyone experience this fault?
Thank you

I know almost nothing about this, but I have a friend who has what I think is a similar problem that occurs if he has a tire low on air.

Probably a problem with a wheel speed sensor. Jack it up and check for any looseness in a front wheel. Seems like it usually happens as the wheel bearings go bad. (The sensor is built into the bearing/hub assembly.) If no problems are noted get the codes read.

Wife's 02 century did that couple weeks ago. Found a broken wire going into the right front wheel bearing. Repaired it and all's good now.

Look at the wheel speed sensors first. Wiring, corrosion, etc. I think you have to replace the bearing on that year.

I was wrong, Rockauto dot com has the wheel speed sensor listed for $8.07.

A lot of time I have seen the o-ring on the WSS go bad, eventually taking out the bearing in time.

There are two catagories of why the TRAC OFF light is on. An anti-lock issue, and an engine performance issue. If you had a wheel speed sensor or other Anti-Lock problem, the ABS warning light is normally on. You need to read the codes in the ABS module and go from there. If the code description is "Invalid Serial Data", you have an engine performance problem that just isn't enough to trigger the check engine light.

CCW nailed it. Cars like yours and mine tend to be pretty hard on front wheel bearings. Trac off and ABS tend to be the first indications that you have one going out. The problem arises when the sensor gets to far from the shutter ring due to bearing wear. The sensor is built inside the bearing. Mine has been through three so far.
