Dave my grand daughter is stationed on Ramstein Air Base. She is attached to a medical unit at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center. Her job involves arranging for the transport of the wounded soldiers and their families. I have had several of my old Army buddies tell me she is very good at her job. She has done this type of work at several bases around the world, including Peril Harbor. I visited her there.

I have never been to Germany. How hard would it be for a English only speaking person to get around over there? I have thought about visiting her there. I would like to see some of the old towns and castles in Germany. My family came from there. I would have to look up the areas/towns.

I am not Dave but I was in the Ramstein area in Sept. and you should not have much of a problem with not speaking German. I can speak and understand some German but in most places there is someone that can help you out. It is a beautful area to visit. I was stationed at the Army depot in Kaiserslautern 40 years ago.

JD surprisingly enough a lot of Germans speak some English. You shouldn't have many problems.

While at Ramstein check out the chruch in the cliff in Idar Oberstein and the Roman ruins and churches in Trier. St. Matthias' Abbey (Abtei St. Matthias), a still-in-use monastery in whose medieval church the only apostle north of the Alps is held to be buried.

If you get the chance, jump all over it..... Plenty of stuff down there to see and you can see more castles, churches, and neat stuff than you can shake a stick at inside a few hours of driving. Most folks speak enough english to get by and after a couple beers, you'll be throwing out some deutsche  Are you retired military? If so, you may be able to get in to some of the stuff set aside for soldiers if there is space available... Site seeing in the cheapseats is a good way to wipe out a weekend also... Up to 5 people can ride a train anywhere for about 20 euro from 1800 Friday to midnight sunday.

I am retired from the reserves. I was on active duty for ten years then in the reserves for twenty-five. So maybe I can qualify for those discounts.

It all depends on my wife's health. She had good months and bad. If she is doing good where she can get around then we will try to go. If she is not good then we will stay home.

I have some old travel credits that are going to expire later in 2012. I was thinking about using them on a trip some where. Was never in Europe. Thinking about going this summer and starting in England. Then working our way over to Germany. Have to see.
