old chest freezer to store horse feed

was wondering if any of you folks ever used a old chest freezer to store horse feed or other feeds in. it would definetly be dry but would it begin to mold over time sure seems like a place to store especially for keeping out the varmits.

I would say if you put a low wattage light in it to keep it dry it should work fine. Even with the lid closed they seem to collect moisture.

I did that for years, it did not mold because the gasket was shot. Stored chicken goat and hog feed. A couple of years ago I replaced it with two 55 gallon metal drums with lids, much easier to open and close and keep clean. The hinges had come loose on the freezer and I had put on door hinges and then they came loose after a while. Basically the door was too heavy to be very handy, but this was a very old freezer, a modern one might be better.

Yes, I agree, moisture will probably be a problem. I have small hopper bottomed bins for feed storage. In the bin where feed doesn't move through too quickly, the condensation makes the feed stick to the sides and eventually mold to some degree.

If you are sticking sacks in the frezer, they might be a barrier between moisture and feed to some degree.

I would give it a try and see how it goes. You can monitor the situation and determine if it is long term feasible.

We have been using one for years. Must be from the 60's or so. Mine has little lids on the top to remove. Really handy. Feed will mold long term, but is you are using it every day its fine.

When I raised a lot of potatoes I stored them in old freezer laid on its back. It was too warm in my basement to keep them from sprouting. Hal

FIL stored horse feed in his for years and never said nothing of mold. At home dad had one on the back porch and we stored our overshoes in it.

i would think a screened vent for air wouild be good just in case the kids get a playing around it and get trapped inside. lost two amish kids that way a few years ago down the road

Over here [downunder }it is illegal to dispose of a refrigerator with door attached because TOO many children have been trapped and deceased.Get a 44 gallon plastic drum with lid, should be cheap. or a 44 steel drum with lid.

Been using them for years without a problem. Started with one old "tank" from the 1950's that had 6" walls. Now I have 2 "modern" ones with thin walls. They are way smaller, but hold more than the old one. I also have an upright freezer to store bags in. Nothing better to keep critters out - unless you have an old "walk in"......

I have been using one for 20 years. Only time feed molded is when it was very humid and I hadn't used any grain for a few weeks. Mine just has the magnetic strip, will hold 5 50 pound bags of feed, nice thing is it's rat proof.
