Brand really isn't a factor, but are new chain saws started and test run at the factory? On e-bay you see ones listed as new in factory sealed box. I've bought two over the years and both looked new, but there was a slight gas smell in the tank. No sign of ever being used to cut wood, both ran and worked great, just wondering.

Just about everyting that runs is factory tested. They even fire a couple of rounds out of new guns before shipping.

The reason for firing the guns, is to register the ballistics for gun tracking. If it is ever used in a crime, the test results will be in the National data base. Then they can track the firearm to the original buyer.

I bought a new Jonsered a few years ago and the dealer (L&M) test ran it before I took it out of the store. I think some engines are test run on the assembly line with another fuel source.

(quoted from post at 08:03:28 12/24/11) The reason for firing the guns, is to register the ballistics for gun tracking. If it is ever used in a crime, the test results will be in the National data base. Then they can track the firearm to the original buyer.

This is not a requirement in all states. Most firearms are test fired to ensure they function properly and the test fired casing is shipped with the firearm. In certain states the receiving dealer will forward that casing over to some state registration agency.

Retail customers located in states that do not require a fired cartridge case may be assured that the fired cartridge case they receive with the firearm at the time of retail purchase is proof that your new Ruger firearm has undergone our normal test firing procedures during manufacture

In theory. All it takes to defeat the firing pin imprint is a quick swipe across the tip of the firing pin with a piece of fine sandpaper and you have an entirely different imprint.

Most after market replacement barrels are less than $100. So regardless of all the smoke politicians blow about tracking firearms, for less than $100, most any firearm can be rendered untraceable. I'm sure the naughty-naughties know this. But to the uninformed public, it lets the blowhard politicians act like they're "doing something".

I've bought two brand new from the local Husqvarna dealer. Both were on the showroom shelf, and when I agreed to the purchase, salesman took them into the shop and had a mechanic gas them up, put oil in the bar oiler, and make sure they ran good before I left with them.

Thanks, thats what I was just told at the local saw shop. He said the fuel wasn't put in the tanks, it was hooked to the fuel line prior to adding the filter. Fired, carb pretty well adjusted, same with the oiler, about a 20 to 30 second test.

Try to find a good local dealer (some like jonsered has to test run the saw and go over it with you) You will need this dealer for warrenty and parts down the road. I would not buy store brands (poulan etc) as there is little service after the sale. Ask your self what you would do from evil bay if the new saw was missing a part or had a problem? (ship it back for $30 postage)
