any thing good or bad about the JD 5525

I'm looking at buying a JD 5525 4wheel drive year is 2007 and was wondering if anyone heard anything good or bad about them them. Please pass it on before I find out the hard way. It has less than 300 hrs on it and comes with a loader and a bush hog mower and is asking $42,000. Thanks

What I would do if I was you is the following:

1. go to a Deere dealer that sells this model and ask what a brand new one costs....If a new one is say $45k then bid less for the one you are looking at.

2. Go on ebay and see what a used 5525 is going for. It just seems high to me. (I bought a new compact deere diesel 4 years ago)

3. A buddy of mine bought a 5 year old 4000 series tractor with front bucket and back hoe for $23k. The 4000 series he has is the 2.2 liter engine I think, or 2.0. He gets $50 per hour with this machine for digging, scooping, grading, whatever.

I hope this helps.
Is the 5525 you are looking at from a dealer or private sale?
I would be leary of a dealer selling this used.

Its a 90 hp 4 wheel drive no cab. The 4000 is a lot smaller tractor It the size of ford 901 with about 55 hp, plus the 4 wheel drive adds a lot to it. It looks brand new and so does the mower which new goes for around $3,000 The man bought it and then died a few years back, so his wife can't use it. He paid over $60,000 for it all in 2007 as much as she can remember and I expect thats low.

My cousin bought one new. Has and has had an issue with the differential lock. Won't stop making a grinding noise.Dealer wouldn't do anythig, just said that's the way it is. Had to tie the pedal up with a rope. Instrument panel went metric on him this summer, Over $500 for some new module.

I looked on tractorhouse and the prices are all over the place, as the horsepower! some say 75,81, or91! Is that a Yanmar, Mannheim, or what? Is it hydrostatic? We have a 01 4600 with the 12-12 power reverser and we just love it, but lots of people like hydrostatic.

john deere has a build your own section on their website. That will get you your list price. Then subtract roughly 10-12 % and you will have close to your cash price. Compare that to what you are paying for the 5525. You have to decide if the warranty is worth the extra $$$. I never really liked the 55xx series, but I was more interested in a row crop tractor, so it may fit your needs just fine.

Had one priced out this spring I think it was right at $53K with loader, and most of the options.

Decided that with the monthly payment north of $700/month, I liked the idea of putting new tires and taking care of a few maintenance items on my current tractor.

They sure are nice, and hopefully someday I"ll get one, just can"t make it pencil out right now.

When you where talking about a 4000 the only one I knew was the ford. Then I started thinking and it was a JD 4000 series. Sorry i wasn't thinking but they are old too if he bought it 5 years old that was a long time ago. The build your own will not show the older models the 5525 is no longer built (it was a 2007 or 2006) and I think it was replaced by the JD5091 or something like that. I'll look that up. I never thought a man should need a warranty if they build them good. If it was going to break I hope it did it in the first 300 hrs.

Guess I should have said the quote was for a 5093 which I think is the replacement for the 5525.

external_link has all the specs on the 5525, wow what a beast of a machine that is. I own a 2000 series deere, a pipsqueak of a tractor compared to that. I guess that it could be worth $40k.

I don't know for sure what it has for a transmission. the man I talked to said it has 24 speed with a loader. so I assume it has the power reverser but not sure. I never heard of a 24 speed. We don't have any dealers up here so you just can't go talk to someone and look at theres. If anyone has some information I could use it, please pass it on. What I learned was 91 engine Hp and 75 PTO. I looked there too and see the 42,000 doesn't look that far out of line. And if I bought it there the shipping would be more than $7000. I called the Credit Union and they think it's worth $35,194 as average in Alaska thats the tractor and loader. I asked them how could they say that when there can only be a handful of the tractors up here. They had no answer. JD doesn't sell many ag tractors they kind of deal only with yellow stuff. every thing is ordered and not stocked.

Get one with a cab for that. After you have one you will never go open again.
Except, nice morning cutting hay at 80 degrees, some wind, no mosquitos, cloud cover. When does that happen?

I don't have a chance to get one with a cab. There are very few ag tractors available in Alaska and I never see a day when its 80 degrees but I would like to get a cab as I will use it in winter and our falls are cold and wet. Don't need the air but can use a heater. Will a cab fit on a tractor if it didn't come with one? I think its the flat floor type. I haven't seen it yet. Maybe there is one in a junk yard with a cab that will fit. Any one try that or know of a good junk yard? I haven't heard anyone say anything bad about the tractor yet. Maybe they made a good one.s

The 5525 is a good machine. We have seen very few issues with them through the dealership. Hydraulic pumps will cavitate and self destruct if fluid is not serviced properly. Machine came factory with either 4045 engine or 5030. Would definitely check serial # with dealer if it has 5030 engine....Lots of product improvements made to the engine.

I dont get it. so is the 5030 better? what was different about the 4045? Is there an easy way to tell by looking at it? Do you know anything about the 24 speed transmission? How many hours have you been seeing on the machines? this one has less than 300 hrs and I expect most of these where at an idle. I will not put more than 200 hrs on the machine in a year most of those will be baling hay. I don't try to run them if its below zero if I need to move snow or pump grain. Have you heard of any cold weather related problems? Lots of questions I know but I'd hate to get stuck with a bummer. I'd never be able to sell it. I'm sure the lady selling it hasn't had any one interested but me and after I buy it no one will be interested in it. If you go to www.alaskaslist.com you will see it has had 1500 hits on the add but only two calls and I'm the only one that has tried to show up to look at it. Just not much farming going on. Thanks for your time.

Negative???? That godawful color.......

Positive???? If someone is chasing you, you can hide out in a dandilion meadow....

For $42,000 you should get some kind of warranty! Lots of things can break or go wrong after only 300 hours. A lot times it's worth paying more to have piece of mind with a good warranty for the next 3 to 5 years or few thousand hours. Tractors, especially JD's, aren't cheap to fix and dealers here are charging $100+/hr for labor. Something to think about.

4045 is the best engine. Well proven. 5030 was a "new" engine on the market. Cold start timing advance sensor is the worst known problem with these tractors. We are down south in GA so not sure about any cold weather problems. If machine was set up for northern market I don't see any reason it would be a problem to use it in 0○F weather.
