O/T Computer Question

I know this is off topic but wanted to ask if any one else knows or has had the same problem. My computer problem question is this! What would make my computer just shut down. It stays running but it says on my monitor "No Signal"???
I have to unplug it and restart it! You never know when it's going to do this. I've taken the cover off and blew all the dust out from inside but this didn't help! Could it be running hot??
Thanks for any info and hope you Have a Happy Holiday Season, from our family in Highland, IL.

Could be running hot - did you clean the filter inside when you blew out the dust? Could also be a dead cooling fan.

Look in control panel and power options.

The "sleep" and "hibernation" functions are pretty flaky for most any Windows PC.

I tend to have it set to never hibernate or let the hard drives shut down, but turn the monitor off after 15 minutes of inactivity. That saves life on the monitor, but keeps the machine ready the minute you hit the mouse or keyboard.

Had that problem last March with a computer that had an ASUS AM3 motherboard in it. Tried reloading software and no change. Replaced the motherboard and ended the problem.

Did you hold the fan blades and really blow out those cooling heat sinks and the power supply? How about the air intake on the front of the machine. Does the video card have a fan on it as well?

If they can't get air, they get hot RIGHT NOW>

Otherwise, I'd be for checking out that video card. Make darned sure it is seated in it's slot.

Mine was doing that this spring when I tried to run videos. I blew it out with one of those canned air things, but it didn't work. There's a heat sink in there behind the fan that's a round thing with fins. My son had to take that right out and take it out in the shop and REALLY blow it out with the air compressor. After the whole canned air thing, when he took it out,the dust was packed in it so tight, there was no sign that I'd blown air in there at all.

For sure,

They really get jammed up with crud in those fins. When that happens, it just cannot cool and the CPU goes into limp mode; just won't hardly move at all.

Worse when the video card has it's own processor as most of 'em do nowadays.

'Course, having bellered all that, if it is one of those tin-can type 'all inclusive' motherboards, they're junk to start with.

Guaranteed right up to the time ya step over the threshold at Wally World. :>)

I moved into the nursing home and got new connection with ATT EVision ended up it was the modem they had sent. They sent a new one and I got connected then it went out again. This time son rebuilt the computer. I do not know what he did but he said. It was now the latest. He is in charge of Computers in Ag-Bio-Enginering Dept at Oklahoa State University. gitrib

My computer was (is) doing the same thing. Shortly after start-up, it just freezes; can't click anything, can't shut it down, nothing. Shut down by the button, wait 30 sec, restart & go through all the warnings about improper shut down & it is good for a minute or two - then dead again. After 2 or 3 episodes, it is fine. If I don't shut down but just put in on sleep mode, everything is fine tommorrow. Only problem, it shuts itself off in the 22 hours while I have it sleeping. I have to remember to go online once during the day. i.e. twice in a 24 hr period.

Bad timing... With Christmas so close and all... (or may be good, depending on your point of view)... Time for a new computer... Or if you are 'handy' with such, a new mother-board/cpu/powersupply... Because it could be either of the three and there is no certain way to determine which without starting to replace parts until it doesn't do that anymore... New computers are pretty inexpensive these days if you don't need a 'gaming' computer... Around the $300 range... Sometimes even with a new flat screen monitor... Good Luck...

Video card or that portion of the mother board? Turned my computer on a couple weeks ago and it sounded like it was running, but no signal to monitor.

Went to Best buy and bought the cheapest video card they had(wich wasn't really cheap), installed, and all is good.

Mine has(or had) the video card integrated in the motherboard.

Hello John B,
With the computer off, take the acces panel out.
Remove and reseat the video card.
It may be the problem
Guido.

The "no video" message is just that: The monitor is getting no signal. Wiggle the cable when it acts up, it could be a broken wire. Check out the monitor and cable on a different PC, if you have one.

The BIOS setup on newer PCs typically has a section for adjusting fan speeds and settings. When you reboot, go into the BIOS setup and see what the temperatures are for the CPU and motherboard. If it's overheating, you should be able to tell.

My PC, which has been running 24x7 for over five years, started acting up and running hot. When I opened it up, I found that the CPU heat sink was completely blocked by lint. It's been fine since I cleaned it out.

That's my guess, cooling fan. Processor heats up and to protect it from over heating, shuts down. That would be the first place I'd look, and not necessarily the one on the chassis for the power supply. The one inside for the processor itself.

Have you tried tapping the space bar a few times? The mouse won't bring some computers out of hibernation.
