Thermostat question : Shop heat

Running overhead radiant in my shop. I like to keep it around 45F when I am not out there. Problem is I have the themostat wired to an outside wall. So shop will be 60F when I have the stat at 40F on the wall. Which is as low as the stat will go.

I just added a single gang box to space the thermostat out of the wall cavity and into the room. Fired it back up so, I'll know in an hour or two what it switches off at. I don't feel any drafts around the box. Stat is the 120/240V style, not 24V.

Just wondering, anyone else have this problem and how did you fix it? Can't put it on an interior wall, there are none. Other thought I had was to raise it higher, but it is already 4ft off the floor.

If the stat has a mercury filled contact switch (like the old Honeywell), you might loosen the stat's mount and rotatate it a few degrees to lower or raise the set point, beyond the designed normal control range. Experiment with five degree rotations and see what you get. Signed involuntarily terminated, industrial process control sales engineer from L&N.

Perhaps mount the stat on a piece of 1.5" rigid foam insulation 16" or 24" square. That may prevent the negative radiant effect you are getting.

Rick,
As other mentioned, insulate behind the thermostat.

Try taking a small fan, mount the fan above the thermostat and push the warm air from the ceiling past the thermostat.

Rick,

Here's a quick, easy, and relatively inexpensive solution that I recently exercised in my own shop. Go on Amazon.com and search for low-temp. thermostat and you will find one made by Honeywell for about $22. These are special low-temp stats for garages and barns and can be set as low as 35 degrees. Works great!

Merry Christmas!

Got a 110 volt outlet nearby? A common nightlight under it would generate enough heat to fool that thermostat into thinking it was warm enough in the room.
