Big 3 2500 trucks

Any one have any "cons" about any of the big 3's 2500's? 2011-2012's? I am not getting a diesel. 2500 with crew or ext cab. Has any one any first hand knowledge of issues they can warn of?

F250 is the same as an F350 single rear wheel with the tow and payload ratings lowered (slightly lighter springs). Same truck, price almost the same.

dave,

I've a 2010 ram cummins....I wanted a manual transmission.

I recommend looking elsewheres...for a simple fact that I get a flat 15mpg, unloaded, driving flatlands, at 55 per unloaded.

My 2001 ram cummins got getter, roughly 18-21 mpg. I feel I've made astep backwards.

Hope you find what you're needing, just saying that i was somewhat dissappointed with the "new" truck.

Sorry to all die-hard cummins/ram fans.
D.

2010 GMC 2500 HD 4 WD, 10 mpg with loaded trailer, can"t complain about power, good ride, small fuel tank, if the low fuel light starts shining you have less than 10 miles to find fuel, long trips are stop and go.

dennis, don't feel bad, my friend got a 2011 ram cummins about 2 months ago and hasn't got up to 12mpg yet with almost no towing. merry Christmas, chuck

GM and Ford both make a fine truck. Dodge, not so much. I buy used so I expect to have repairs, but Dodge's seem to stay broke from day one. We had one at work, but we weren't allowed to tow with it, not that it mattered. It was in the shop as often as it was on the road. Fortunately for the government, Dodge did honor the warranty on their dumpster on wheels. If you want a job in the mechanics field, go to work at Dodge. you will get job security. I'm not the type of fellow to rather push a GM then drive a Ford, or vice virsa, but Dodge really does make a pathetic truck. I have a chevy 2500, with 330,000 miles on it, and I'm good with it. I've had Fords and they're a fine truck.

I have a 07 new body style 2500 extended cab Chev gas. I don't think they have changed much on them other than getting a couple more hp out of the 6 liter engine. Mine has the big gear in the rear end, a 410, I think. It is a extended cab with four wheel drive and 6 speed automatic. I only have 34,000 miles on it as I don't use it unless I'm pulling or hauling something. I have not had any problem with it and have not taken back for anything. I get 8-11 mi per gallon pulling and about 12 mi per gallon driving 60 empty. It does a good job pulling but I take it pretty easy driving it. I liked the 02 Dodge I had too but can't hardly complain about the Chev. My friend has a 08 4 door almost like mine with close to 100,000 miles on it and has had no problem with it. I beleive they are building them alot better than they use to.

My personal experience has been the same as Bob Huntress below. The Chevy and the Ford hold up good and are comparable. The front end parts on the Dodge are always wearing out. And they eat driveshaft center bearings like candy.

Just sold my 1989 Chevy 1 ton which ran a plow on the front in the winter and a 10,000 lb trailer in the summer. Finally wore it out. Picked up another Chevy 1 ton, dually dump truck this time.

As I read the responses, everyone seems to have their likes, dislikes. I'm from northern Indiana where they still make RVs and travel trailers, and I see new travel trailers being pulled down the interstate all the time, but by one tons. I see more Cummins Dodges pulling them than anything else, most often 4x4 dualies, automatics. That doesn't make them good necessarily. Could me the local Dodge dealers give the best deals. But I've asked a couple few what they think of them, and they say they love them. I guess that made in Korea rear axle that replaced the Dana back in about '04 or '05 seems to hold up. Its durability came into question at first, but I haven't heard a complaint about one since.

As for 3/4 ton, I have a '96 that I love to death, and plan to rebuild it as often as I need to until I get a million miles out of it. Seriously. Its got about 280K on the odometer and I had that auto transmission rebuilt at about 260K. 4x4 Cummins. On the other hand, I have an '02 Dodge, same truck except extended cab with its 8' bed, and had the front Dana 60 rebuilt at 25K, transmission rebuilt at about 50K. My '96 is like a Timex watch that takes a lickin' and keeps tickin'. My '02 is pampered, and has had a couple of majors with 70K on the odometer. The new one ton drivers around me seem to love their Dodge trucks.

Now, is a young lady lives down the road from me that loves her 3/4 ton, gas, 4x4 crew cab Chevys, and has a new one now that she pulls a 30' fifth wheel horse trailer with, frequently. And she did with her '98 that she traded for this one. Obviously, Chevys are good to her. Her boyfriend has two fairly new 3/4 Dodges, both 4x4 Cummins regular cabs, and he works them plenty, and pulls his Case IH MFWD Farmall series on a fifth wheel with. Thats a lot of tractor to pull with a 3/4 ton, but he does. And I have neighbors that have Fords and love them to death.

Good luck Sir.

Mark

If you will delete all of the emissions junk that 15 mpg will go up. Trust me I've been around a lot of them that do. It pays for it self rather quickly.

We have GM trucks at the place where I work. Diesel and gas both. They are ok trucks. I don't care anything for the independent front axle. they ride good but thats about it. They are by far the best looking new trucks on the outside. Dodge and Ford have some of the most ugly trucks ever made I think. Gas engines, 5.3 has worked really well for us as well as the 6.0 in the GM trucks. I don't know anyone who has ran the 6.2 in a GMC yet. What I have heard about it in a Yukon XL it gets horrible milage. Ford gas burners are a gutless wonder. Dodge gaser's seem so so to me. One will have some guts the next 10 won't. I've got a ton Dodge diesel now. I'll never have a gas 3/4 or ton to pull a trailer with again. I've had about 8 cummins trucks 92-07 models. Just my two since.

My cousin had the same thing happen with his Ford Power Strokes. So it's not just a Cummins thing.

Yes I was adressing you and unless your truck is a c&c or you or someone else removed it--it has a DPF filter in the exhaust. You might be thinking about the DEF fluid in witch case you are right unless you have a c&c.

Yes this will void your motor warranty unless you have one of very few understanding dealers ,but your motor should last longer plus the gain in MPG's is worth it for alot of folks.
